Luther Bible 1545
there is none to deliver us out of their hand.
We must take our bread with the sword of our life before the sword in the wilderness.
our skin is burned as in a furnace from the abominable hunger.
They have weakened the women of Zion, and the virgins of the cities of Judah.
The princes are gone from them, and the persons of the ancients are not honoured.
The young men have borne millstones, and the lads have stumbled at the carrying of wood.
The old men sit no more under the gate, neither do the young men play with strings.
The joy of our heart is ended; our song is turned into lamentation.
The crown of our head is fallen off. O woe, that we have sinned so!
Therefore also our heart is grieved, and our eyes are darkened.
For the mountain of Zion’s sake, because it lieth desolate, and the foxes run upon it.
But thou, O LORD, which abidest for ever, and thy throne for ever, 20. Why wilt thou so utterly forget ours, and so utterly forsake the length of us?
Bring us again, O LORD, that we may return unto thee: make our days as of old.
For thou hast rejected us, and art too wroth with us.

The prophet Ezekiel (Ezekiel) ^
Chapter 1
Face of the spread of Christ’s kingdom through the preaching ministry.
In the thirtieth year, on the fifth day of the fourth month, when I was among the captives by the waters of Chebar, the heavens were opened, and God showed me visions.
This fifth day of the month was the fifth year since Jehoiachin king of Judah was carried away captive.
And the word of the LORD came unto Ezekiel the son of Busi the priest in the land of the Chaldeans, by the river Chebar; and there the hand of the LORD was upon him.
And I looked, and, behold, there came a rushing wind from the north, with a great cloud full of fire shining round about: and in the midst of the same fire there was as it were light.
And within was fashioned like four beasts, and among them one fashioned like a man.
And every one had four faces, and four wings.
And their legs were straight, but their feet were like round feet, and shone as bright brass.
And had men’s hands under their wings in their four places: for they had all four their faces and their wings.
And the same wings were one upon another. And when they went, they were not to turn about, but whithersoever they went, they went straight before them.
Their faces on the right side of the fours were like unto a man and a lion: but on the left side of the fours their faces were like unto an ox and an eagle.
And their faces and their wings were parted above, and two wings were clasped together, and two wings covered their bodies.
Whither they went, they went straight before them: but they went whithersoever the wind blew, and could not turn when they went.
And the beasts were seen as coals of fire burning, and as torches going among the beasts.
And the fire gave forth a brightness, and out of the fire proceeded lightning.
And the beasts ran to and fro like lightning.
And when I saw the beasts, behold, a wheel stood upon the earth by the four beasts, and was as four wheels to look upon.
And the same wheels were like unto turquoise, and all four of them were one like unto another: and they were as one wheel in another to look upon.
And when they should go, they could go into all their four places, and could not turn when they went.
Their figs and their height were terrible; and their rims were full of eyes round about on all four wheels.
And when the beasts went, the wheels went also beside them: and when the beasts lifted themselves up from the earth, the wheels lifted themselves up also.
Whithersoever the wind went, they went also; and the wheels went up beside them: for there was a living wind in the wheels.
When they went, these also went; and when they kept, these also kept; and when they lifted themselves up from the earth, the wheels also lifted themselves up beside them: for there was a living wind in the wheels.
And above the beasts it was fashioned like the heaven, as a crystal, terrible, spread straight up above them,
And under heaven their wings were stretched out one against another, and every man’s body was covered with two wings.
And I heard the wings as the great waters, and as the sound of the Almighty when they went, and as the tumult of an army. And when they were still, they let down their wings.
And when they sat still, and let down their wings, there was a thunder in heaven above them.
And above the heaven that was above them was fashioned like a sapphire, like a chair: and upon the same chair sat one fashioned like a man.
And I looked, and, behold, it was as the brightness of light; and within it was fashioned like fire round about. From the loins thereof above, and from the loins thereof beneath, I saw it shining like fire round about.
As the rainbow standeth in the clouds, when it rained, so it shined round about. This was the appearance of the glory of the Lord. And when I had seen it, I fell on my face, and heard one speak.

Chapter 2
Ezekiel’s call to the prophetic office.
And he said unto me, Son of man, stand upon thy feet, and I will speak unto thee.
And when he spake thus unto me, I was refreshed, and stood upon my feet, and hearkened unto him that spake unto me.
And he said unto me, Son of man, I send thee unto the children of Israel, to the apostate people, which have gone astray from me. They and their fathers have done evil against me unto this day.
But the children to whom I send thee have hard heads and hardened hearts. To them shalt thou say, Thus saith the Lord GOD.
They shall obey, or else they shall not obey. It is a disobedient house: nevertheless they shall know that there is a prophet among them.
And thou, son of man, shalt not fear them, nor be afraid of their words. There are thorns among thee, stubborn and prickly, and thou dwellest among scorpions: but thou shalt not be afraid of their words, nor be dismayed at their faces, though they be a rebellious house, 7. But thou shalt tell them my word, and they shall obey, or else they shall not: for they are a rebellious people.
But thou, son of man, hear thou what I say unto thee, and be not disobedient, as the disobedient house is. Open your mouth and eat what I will give you.
And I looked, and, behold, there was a hand stretched out toward me, having a letter folded up.
This she spread out before me, and it was written within and without; and within it was written: Lamentation, and woe.
Ch. 3, v. 1. And he said unto me, Son of man, eat that which is before thee, even this letter, and go and preach unto the house of Israel.
And I opened my mouth, and he gave me the letter to eat.
And said unto me, Son of man, thou must eat this letter which I give thee into thy womb, and fill thy belly therewith. So I ate it, and it was in my mouth as sweet as honey.
And he said unto me, Son of man, go unto the house of Israel, and preach my word unto them.
For I send thee not unto a people that have a strange speech and an unknown language, but unto the house of Israel;
Not, indeed, to great nations, which have strange speech and unknown language, whose words thou canst not hear. Even if I sent thee to them, they would gladly hear thee.
But the house of Israel will not hear thee; for they themselves will not hear me: for all the house of Israel have hard faces, and hardened hearts.
Yet have I made thy face hard against their faces, and thy forehead against their foreheads.
Yea, I have made thy forehead as hard as a demon, harder than a rock. Therefore fear not, neither be dismayed at them, because they are a rebellious house.
(Ezekial)
Chapter 3
The prophet is led to Babel.
And he said unto me, Son of man, all my words which I say unto thee, lay hold on them with
thine heart, and receive them in thine ears.
And go unto the captives of thy people, and preach unto them, and say unto them, Thus saith the LORD GOD; they will hear, or they will forbear.
And a wind lifted me up, and I heard behind me a sound as of a great earthquake: Blessed be the glory of the LORD in their place.
And there was a sound of the wings of the beasts kissing one another, and also the rattling of the wheels hard by them, and the sound of a great earthquake.
And the wind took me up, and led me away. And I went, and was sore afraid: but the hand of the LORD held me fast.
And I came to the captives that dwelt by the water of Chebar, where the almonds were in the month of Abib, and sat with them that sat there, and abode there among them seven days in sorrow.
And when the seven days were expired, the word of the LORD came unto me, saying: 17. Son of man, I have set
