Luther Bible 1545
suffereth in the flesh ceaseth from sins,
  • That he henceforth, which is yet in the flesh, should not live unto the lusts of men, but unto the will of God.
  • For it is enough that we have spent the past time of life according to the will of the Gentiles, walking in fornication, lusts, drunkenness, gluttony, drunkenness, and abominable idolatries.
  • That they are displeased, lest ye run with them into the same desolate, disorderly manner, and blaspheme;
  • Which shall give account unto him that is ready to judge the quick and the dead.
  • For to this end is the gospel preached also to the dead, that they might be judged according to the flesh, but live in the Spirit of God.
  • But the end of all things is at hand.
    (Epistle on the Sunday after the Ascension of Christ, Exaudi.)
  • Be ye therefore temperate and sober in prayer. Above all, love one another fervently, for love covers the multitude of sins.
  • be hospitable to one another without marbles!
  • And serve one another, every one with the gift which he hath received, as the good stewards of the many mercies of God.
  • If any man speak, to speak it as the word of God; if any man have an office, to do it as of the ability which God hath set forth; that in all things God may be glorified through JESUS
    CHRIST, to whom be glory and power for ever and ever. Amen]
    (Epistle on the Sunday after New Year.)
  • Beloved, let not the heat that cometh upon you (which cometh upon you, that ye are tempted) be strange unto you, as if some strange thing happened unto you, 13. But rejoice that ye suffer with Christ, that ye may have joy and gladness at the revelation of his glory.
  • Blessed are ye when ye are reviled above the name of Christ: for the Spirit, which is the
    Spirit of glory and of God, resteth upon you. With them he is blasphemed, but with you he is glorified.
  • But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or a thief, or an evildoer, or as one that entereth into a strange office.
  • But if he suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him honour God in such a case.
  • For the time is come for judgment to begin against the house of God. But if it be so with us first, what end shall it be with them that believe not the gospel of God?
  • And if the righteous be hardly preserved, where will the wicked and the sinner appear?
  • Therefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commend their souls unto him, as unto the faithful Creator in good works].
    (1 Peter)
    Chapter 5
    Of the office of the elders, the duty of the youth, and of all Christians in general.
  • The elders which are among you I exhort, being fellow elders, and witnesses of the sufferings which are in Christ, and partakers of the glory which shall be revealed: 2. Feed ye the flock of Christ, as ye are commanded, and watch carefully, not forcibly, but willingly; not for shameful gain, but of the heart,
  • Not as ruling over the people, but become examples to the flock; 4. So when the Arch Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of honors.
  • Likewise, ye young men, be subject unto the elders. All of you be subject to one another, and hold fast to humility; for God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.
    (Epistle on the third Sunday after Trinity.)
  • Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in his time.
  • Cast all your care upon him: for he careth for you.
  • Be ye sober, and watch: for your adversary the devil walketh about as a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.
  • Resist them firmly in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are upon your brethren which are in the world.
  • But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory in Christ JESUS, the same shall make you full, and strengthen, and establish you, who suffer a little while.
  • To Him be glory and power forever and ever. Amen]
  • By your faithful brother Silvanus, as I eight, I have written unto you a little, to exhort and testify that this is the right grace of God, wherein ye stand.
  • Greetings unto you that are chosen together with you to Babylon, and unto my son Mark.
  • Greet one another with the kiss of love. Peace be to all who are in Christ Jesus. Amen.

    The second letter of Peter (2 Peter) ^
    Chapter 1
    The fruitfulness of faith in good works. Praise of the Holy Scriptures.
  • Simon Peter, a servant and apostle of JESUS CHRIST: To them that have just obtained with us the same dear faith in the righteousness which our GOD giveth, and the Saviour JESUS
    CHRIST.
  • May God give you much grace and peace through the knowledge of God and of Jesus Christ our Lord.
  • After all his divine power (which is for life and godliness) is given unto us, through the knowledge of him that hath called us by his glory and virtue,
  • By which are given unto us the most precious and exceeding great promises, that by these ye
    might be made partakers of the divine nature, if ye would flee the corruptible pleasures of the world:
  • then give all your diligence to it, and present virtue in your faith, and modesty in virtue.
  • And in modesty temperance, and in temperance patience, and in patience godliness.
  • And in godliness brotherly love, and in brotherly love common love.
  • For if these things abound among you, they shall not make you slothful nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord JESUS CHRIST.
  • But he that hath not these things is blind, and gropeth with his hand, and forgetteth the purification of his former sins.
  • Wherefore, brethren, be the more diligent to establish your calling and election. For where ye do these things, ye shall not stumble.
  • And so shall be abundantly presented unto you the entrance into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour JEsu Christ.
  • Therefore will I not cease always to remind you of these things, though ye know them, and be strengthened in the present truth.
  • For I count it expedient, while I am in this tabernacle, to awake and remind you.
  • For I know that I must soon cast off my tabernacle, as our Lord Jesus Christ hath also declared unto me.
  • But I will be diligent, that after I am departed ye may keep these things in remembrance.
    (Epistle on the sixth Sunday after Epiphany.)
  • For we have not followed wise fables, when we made known unto you the power and the coming of our Lord JESUS Christ: but we have seen his glory for ourselves, 17. When he received glory and honour from God the Father by a voice which came to him of great glory: This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
  • And this voice have we heard brought down from heaven, when we were with him in the holy mount.
  • We have a sure word of prophecy; and ye do well to hearken unto it, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the morning star arise in your hearts.
  • And this ye ought to know for the first, that no prophecy in the scripture is of your own interpretation;
  • For no prophecy has ever been produced by human will; but the holy men of God have spoken, impelled by the Holy Spirit].
    (2 Peter)
    Chapter 2
    Of false teachers, their punishment, and seductive change.
  • And there were also false prophets among the people, as there shall be false teachers among you, which shall bring in corrupt sects, and shall deny the Lord that bought them, and shall bring upon themselves swift condemnation.
  • And many shall follow their destruction: by whom shall the way of truth be blasphemed.
  • And by covetousness with fancied words shall they deal with you: of whom the judgment of long time is not tardy, and their condemnation doth not sleep.
  • For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them out into hell with chains of darkness, and delivered them up to be judged;
  • And spared not the former world, but preserved Noah the preacher of righteousness, and delivered and brought the flood upon the world of the wicked;
  • And hath reduced the cities of Sodom and Gornorrah to ashes, and turned them back, and condemned them, to set an example unto the wicked that should come after; 7. And hath redeemed righteous Lot, to whom the wicked men did all the harm with their lewdness;
  • For while he was righteous, and dwelt among them, to see and to hear, they tormented the righteous soul from day to day with their unrighteous works.
  • The LORD knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptation, but to keep the unrighteous unto the day of judgment, to chastise them;
  • But most of all they that walk after the flesh in unclean lusts, and despise the kingdom, being
    foolish, stubborn, not trembling to blaspheme the majesties, 11. If the angels, which have greater strength and might, endure not the blasphemous judgment against them from the LORD.
  • But they are like the unreasoning beasts, which are born by nature to be caught and slain, blaspheming, knowing nothing of it, and shall perish in their. corruptible nature 13. And bring away the reward of iniquity. They take pleasure in temporal pleasures; they are a disgrace and a vice; they eat of your alms, they eat of yours,
  • Have eyes full of adultery, do not let sin hinder them, lure to themselves the frivolous souls, have a heart cunning with avarice, accursed people,
  • Forsaking the right way, and
