Luther Bible 1545
must come to pass after these things.
  • And immediately I was in the spirit. And, behold, a throne was set in heaven, and there sat one upon the throne.
  • And he that sat was like unto the stone of jasper and sardis: and there was a rainbow round about the throne, like unto an emerald.
  • And round about the throne were twenty and four chairs: and upon the chairs sat twenty and four elders clothed in white raiment, having on their heads crowns of gold.
  • And out of the throne proceeded lightnings, and thunderings, and voices: and seven lamps of fire burned before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God.
  • And before the throne was a sea of glass like unto crystal, and in the midst of the throne, and round about the throne, four beasts full of eyes, before and behind.
  • And the first beast was like a lion, and the second beast like a calf, and the third beast had a face like a man, and the fourth beast like a flying eagle.
  • And every one of the four beasts had six wings round about, and were full of eyes within: and they had no rest day or night, saying: Holy, holy, holy is the LORD God Almighty, who was, and who is, and who is to come.
  • And when the beasts gave glory and honour and thanks unto him that sat on the throne, who liveth for ever and ever,
  • And the four and twenty elders fell down before him that sat on the throne, and worshipped him that liveth for ever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, and said: 11. O LORD, thou art worthy to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and by thy will they have the being and are created.
    (Revelation)
    Chapter 5
    Christ, the Lion and the Lamb, who opens the sealed book, is praised with a new song.
  • And I saw in the right hand of him that sat on the throne a book written within and without, sealed with seven seals.
  • And I saw a strong angel preach with a loud voice: Who is worthy to open the book and to break its seals?
  • And no man in heaven, nor in earth, nor under the earth, was able to open the book, and to look therein.
  • And I wept greatly, because no man was found worthy to open the book, nor to read, nor to look therein.
  • And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not. Behold, the lion that is of the seed of Judah, the root of David, hath overcome to open the book, and to break the seven seals thereof.
  • And I looked, and, behold, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent into all the earth.
  • And he came and took the book out of the right hand of him that sat on the throne.
  • And when he had taken the book, the four beasts and the four and twenty elders fell before the Lamb, having every man harps and golden vials full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints,
  • And they sang a new song, and said: Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou art slain, and hast bought us of God with thy blood out of all kindreds, and tongues, and people, and nations.
  • And have made us kings and priests unto our God, and we shall be kings in the earth.
  • And I saw and heard a voice of many angels round about the throne, and round about the beasts, and round about the elders; and their number was many thousand times a thousand.
  • And they said with a loud voice: The Lamb that is slain is worthy to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and praise.
  • And I heard every creature that is in heaven, and that is in earth, and that is under the earth, and that is in the sea, and all that is within, saying unto him that sat upon the throne, and unto the Lamb, Praise, and honour, and glory, and power, for ever and ever.
  • And the four beasts said: Amen. And the four and twenty elders fell down, and worshipped him that liveth for ever and ever.
    (Revelation)
    Chapter 6
    Opening six different seals.
  • And I saw the Lamb of the seals open one. And I heard one of the four beasts say, as with a voice of thunder, Come and see.
  • And I looked, and, behold, a white horse; and he that sat on him had a bow; and there was given unto him a crown: and he went forth to overcome, and to conquer.
  • And when he had opened the other seal, I heard the other beast say, Come and see.
  • And another horse came out, which was red: and it was given to him that sat on him to take peace from the earth, and to slay one another: and there was given unto him a great sword.
  • And when he had opened the third seal, I heard the third beast say, Come and see. And I looked, and, behold, a black horse; and he that sat on him had balances in his hand.
  • And I heard a voice among the four beasts say, A measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley for a penny; and do not harm the oil and the wine.
  • And when he had opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth beast say, Come and see.
  • And, behold, I saw a pale horse, and he that sat on him, whose name was Death, and Hell followed after him. And power was given unto them to kill the fourth part of the earth with the sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth.
  • And when the fifth seal was opened, I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of GOD, and for the testimony which they had.
  • And they cried with a loud voice, saying: O LORD, holy and true, how long wilt thou judge and not avenge our blood upon them that dwell upon the earth?
  • And to them was given every man a white robe: and it was said unto them, that they should rest yet a little season, until their fellowservants and their brethren should come in full, and be killed as they were.
  • And I saw the sixth seal opened; and, behold, there was a great earthquake, and the sun was black as sackcloth, and the moon was as blood.
  • And the stars of heaven fell to the earth, as a fig tree casteth her figs when she is moved by a great wind.
  • And the heaven departed as a wrapped book; and all the mountains and islands were moved out of their places.
  • And the kings of the earth, and the rulers, and the rich men, and the captains, and the mighty men, and all the bondmen, and all the free men, hid themselves in the clefts and in the rocks of the mountains.
  • And they said unto the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb;
  • For the great day of his wrath is come, and who can stand?
    (Revelation)
    Chapter 7
    Consolation of the church in her afflicted state.
  • And afterward I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that no wind should blow upon the earth, nor upon the sea, nor upon any tree.
    (Epistle on the Day of All Saints.)
  • And I saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God; and he cried with a loud voice to the four angels, to whom it was given to destroy the earth and the sea.
  • And he said, Damage not the earth, nor the sea, nor the trees, until we seal the servants of our God in their foreheads].
  • And I heard the number of them that were sealed, an hundred and forty and four thousand, which were sealed of all the families of the children of Israel: 5. Of the family of Judah, twelve thousand sealed; of the family of Turnab, twelve thousand sealed; of the family of Gad, twelve thousand sealed;
  • Of the family of Asher, twelve thousand sealed; of the family of Naphtali, twelve thousand sealed; of the family of Manasseh, twelve thousand sealed;
  • Of the family of Simeon, twelve thousand sealed; of the family of Levi, twelve thousand sealed; of the family of Issachar, twelve thousand sealed;
  • Of the family of Zebulun, twelve thousand sealed; of the family of Joseph, twelve thousand sealed; of the family of Benjamin, twelve thousand sealed.
  • After these things I looked, and, behold, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and people, and tongues, standing before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, and palms in their hands,
  • Cried with a loud voice, saying: Hail to Him who sits on the throne, our God, and to the Lamb!
  • And all the angels stood round about the throne, and the elders, and the four beasts, and fell on their faces before the throne, and worshipped God.
  • And they said: Amen! Praise and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and praise and power and strength be to our God forever and ever! Amen.
  • And one of the elders answered and said unto me, Who are these that are clothed in white raiment, and whence came they?
