shall keep the watch in the house of the LORD for the king.
  • And ye shall compass the king round about, every man with his armour in his hand: and whosoever cometh in between the wall, let him die, that ye may be with the king when he goeth out and when he cometh in.
  • And the captains of an hundred did according to all that Jehoiada the priest commanded them, and took their men that came in on the sabbath with them that went out on the sabbath, and came unto Jehoiada the priest.
  • And the priest gave unto the captains of the guard spears and shields, which had been David’s, which were in the house of the LORD.
  • And the guard stood round about the king, every man with his armour in his hand, from the corner of the house on the right hand even unto the corner of the house on the left hand, toward the altar, and toward the house.
  • And he brought forth the king’s son, and put a crown upon him, and gave him the testimony; and they made him king, and anointed him, and joined their hands together, and said: Happy is the king!
  • And when Athaliah heard the cry of the people that ran, she came unto the people into the house of the LORD.
  • And, behold, the king stood by the pillar, as was his custom, and the singers and the trumpeters by the king: and all the people of the land were glad, and blew with the trumpets: but Athaliah rent her clothes, and said, Rebellion, rebellion!
  • And Jehoiada the priest commanded the captains of hundreds that were set over the host, and said unto them: Bring her out unto the house into the court: and whosoever followeth her, let him die by the sword. For the priest had said that she should not die in the house of the LORD.
  • And they laid hands on her, and she went in by the way of the horses unto the king’s house, and was slain there.
  • And Jehoiada made a covenant between the LORD, and the king, and the people, that they should be the LORD’S people: so also between the king and the people.
  • And all the people of the land went into the church of Baal, and brake down his altars, and brake his images in pieces: and they slew Mathan the priest of Baal before the altars. And the priest appointed the offices of the house of the LORD.
  • And he took the captains of hundreds, and the captains of the guard, and all the people of the land, and brought the king down from the house of the LORD, and came by the way of the gate of the guard unto the king’s house: and he sat upon the king’s throne.
  • And all the people of the land rejoiced, and the city was quiet: and they slew Athaliah with the sword in the king’s house.
  • And Joash was seven years old when he began to reign.

    Chapter 12
    Reign of Joash king of Judah.
  • In the seventh year of Jehu Joash reigned king, and reigned forty years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Zibea of Bersaba.
  • And Joash did that which was right and pleasing in the sight of the LORD, as long as Jehoiada the priest taught him,
  • Notwithstanding they removed not the high places: for the people sacrificed and burned incense yet in the high places.
  • And Joash said unto the priests, All the money that is sanctified, that it may be brought into the house of the LORD, which is common, the money that every man giveth in the estimation of his soul, and all the money that every man offereth freely, that it may be brought into the house of the LORD,
  • And let the priests take them, every one of his acquaintance. And they shall repair that which is broken down in the house of the LORD, where they find it broken down.
  • And it came to pass, when the priests had not repaired the house that was broken down until the three and twentieth year of Joash the king, that the priests repaired it, 7. And king Joash called for Jehoiada the priest, and for the priests, and said unto them: Why do ye not repair that which is broken down in the house? Now therefore ye shall not take the money, every man of his acquaintance, unto yourselves; but ye shall give it unto that which is broken down in the house.
  • And the priests granted not to take money of the people, neither to repair the building of the house.
  • And Jehoiada the priest took an ark, and bored a hole in the top thereof, and set it by the right hand of the altar, where they go into the house of the LORD. And the priests that kept the threshold put therein all the money that was brought into the house of the LORD.
  • And it came to pass, when they saw that there was much money in the ark, that the king’s scribe came up with the high priest, and bound up the money, and numbered it, which was found for the house of the LORD.
  • And they gave the money in cash unto them that wrought and appointed the house of the LORD: and they gave it out unto the carpenters that wrought and appointed the house of the LORD,
  • To the masons, and to the stonecutters, and to them that bought timber and hewn stone, to repair the dilapidations of the house of the LORD, and to repair all that they found needful in the house.
  • But they made not silver bowls, psalteries, cymbals, trumpets, nor any vessels of gold or silver, in the house of the LORD, of the money that was brought into the house of the LORD, 14. But it was given to the workmen, that they might repair with it that which was broken down in the house of the LORD.
  • Neither charged the men, to whom the money was given, that they should give it to the labourers: but they dealt in faith.
  • But the money of trespass offerings and of sin offerings was not brought into the house of the LORD: for it was the priest’s.
  • At that time Hazael king of Syria went up, and fought against Gath, and took them. And when Hazael set his face to go up to Jerusalem,
  • And Jehoash king of Judah took all that was hallowed, which Jehoshaphat, Jehoram, and Ahaziah, kings of Judah, his fathers, had hallowed, and that which he had hallowed, and all the gold that was found in the treasury of the house of the LORD, and in the king’s house, and sent it unto Hazael king of Syria. Then he departed from Jerusalem.
  • And the rest of the acts of Jehoash, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?
  • And his servants rebelled, and made a league, and smote him in the house of Millo, when they go down to Silla.
  • For Jehoshabar the son of Shimeath, and Jehozabad the son of Shomer, his servants, slew him. And they buried him with his fathers in the city of David. And his son reigned in his stead.

    Chapter 13
    Government of Jehoahaz and Joash.
  • In the twenty and third year of Jehoahaz the son of Ahaziah king of Judah, Jehoahaz the son of
    Jehu reigned over Israel in Samaria seventeen years.
  • And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, and walked in the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin, and departed not from it.
  • And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he delivered them into the hand of Hazael king of Syria, and into the hand of Benhadad the son of Hazael, all the days of their life.
  • But Jehoahaz besought the LORD in his face. And the LORD hearkened unto him: for he saw the affliction of Israel, how that the king of Syria oppressed them.
  • And the LORD gave Israel a Saviour, which brought them out of the hand of the Syrians, that the children of Israel might dwell in their tents, as before.
  • But they departed not from the sin of the house of Jeroboam, which made Israel to sin, but walked therein. And the grove of Samaria stood still.
  • For there remained no more of Jehoahaz’s people than fifty horsemen, ten chariots, and ten thousand footmen. For the king of Syria had slain them, and made them as the dust of the threshingfloor.
  • And the rest of the acts of Jehoahaz, and all that he did, and his might, behold, they are written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel.
  • And Jehoahaz slept with his fathers, and they buried him in Samaria. And Jehoash his son reigned in his stead.
  • In the thirty and seventh year of Jehoash king of Judah, Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz reigned over Israel in Samaria sixteen years.
  • And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, and repented not of all the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin, but walked in them.
  • And the rest of the acts of Jehoash, and what he did, and his might, how he fought with Amaziah king of Judah, behold, they are written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel.
  • And Joash slept with his fathers, and Jeroboam sat upon his throne. And Joash was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel.
