hast instructed many, and hast strengthened hands; 4. Thy speech hath lifted up the fallen, and thou hast strengthened the trembling knees.

But when it cometh upon thee, thou shalt be weak: and when it cometh upon thee, thou shalt be afraid.

is this your (God’s) fear, comfort, hope, and godliness?

Thinkest thou, where hath the innocent perished, or where hath the righteous ever been destroyed?

As I have seen them plow toil, and sow mischief, and they also reap it, 9. That they should perish by the breath of God, and be consumed by the spirit of his wrath.

The roaring of the lions, and the voice of the great lions, and the teeth of the young lions, are broken.

The lion is consumed, that he rob no more: and the young of the lioness are scattered.

And there came unto me a secret word, and mine ear received a word of it.

When I have beheld visions in the night, when sleep falleth upon men, 14. Then fear and trembling came upon me, and all my bones were troubled.

And when the Spirit passed over before me, the hair of my head stood on end in my flesh.

And there stood a vision before mine eyes, and I knew not the form thereof: it was still, and I heard a voice:

How can a man be more righteous than God, or a man more pure than he who made him?

Behold, there is none without blame among his servants, and he findeth folly in his messengers.

How many more of them that dwell in the houses of clay, and that are founded upon the earth, shall be eaten of the worms?

From the morning until the evening they are cut off, and before they know it they are gone; 21. And the remnant of them perish, and die also unawares.

Chapter 5
Eliphaz continues in his punishment.

Name me one; what matter if thou find one? And look around thee for any saint.

But wrath slayeth a foolish man, and zeal slayeth a foolish man.

I saw a fool rooted up, and I suddenly cursed his house.

His children shall be far from salvation, and shall be broken in the gate, because there shall be no saviour.

His harvest shall the hungry eat, and the armed shall take him, and his goods shall the thirsty drink.

For trouble cometh not out of the earth, neither doth mischief grow out of the field, 7. but man is born to misfortune, as the birds hover to soar.

But I will now speak of God and act from Him, 9. Who doeth great things that cannot be searched out, and wonders that cannot be numbered; 10. Who giveth rain upon the land, and causeth water to come upon the streets.

He that exalteth the lowly, and lifteth up the afflicted.

He bringeth to nought the devices of the crafty, that their hand may not execute them.

He fähet the wise in their craftiness, and overthroweth the counsel of the perverse, 14. That they may walk in darkness by day, and grope in the south as in the night; 15. And delivereth the poor from the sword, and from their mouth, and from the hand of the mighty;

And the hope of the poor is, that wickedness shall shut her mouth.

Behold, blessed is the man whom God punisheth: therefore refuse not the chastening of the Almighty.

For he woundeth and bindeth up; he breaketh in pieces, and his hand healeth.

Out of six tribulations shall he deliver thee; and in the seventh no evil shall touch thee.

He shall deliver thee from death in tribulation, and from the hand of the sword in war.

He shall hide thee from the scourge of the tongue, that thou fear not destruction when it cometh.

In destruction and hunger thou shalt laugh, and shalt not be afraid of the wild beasts of the land,

But thy covenant shall be with the stones of the field, and the wild beasts of the earth shall keep peace with thee;

And thou shalt know that thy tabernacle is at peace; and thou shalt keep thy dwelling, and shalt not sin;

And thou shalt know that thy seed shall be multiplied, and thy seed as the grass of the earth; 26. And thou shalt come to the grave in old age, as sheaves are brought in in their season.

Behold, we have searched it out, and it is so; obey it, and mark it.

Chapter 6
Responsibility against Eliphaz.

Job answered and said:

If my sorrow were weighed, and my affliction put into a balance together, 3. It would be heavier than the sand of the sea: therefore all that I say is vain.

For the arrows of the Almighty are in me, the fury of the Almighty drinketh out of my spirit, and the terrors of God are upon me.

The deer crieth not when he hath grass; the ox bleateth not when he hath his meat.

can you also eat that is unsalted? Or who likes to taste the white around the yolk?

That which my soul hateth to touch is the meat of my sorrows.

O that my request might be granted, and that God might give me that which I hope for!

That God would begin, and smite me, and let his hand go, and break me in pieces!

Then would I have consoled myself, and prayed in my sickness that he would not spare me. I have not denied the words of the Holy One.

What is my strength, that I may persevere? and what is my end, that my soul should be patient?

If my strength be not of stone, my flesh is not of brass.

for I have nowhere to turn, and my fortune is gone.

He that refuseth mercy to his neighbour putteth away the fear of the Almighty.

My brethren pass away contemptuously before me, as a brook, as the rivers of waters pass by.

But they that are afraid of the frost, upon them shall the snow fall.

In time, when the heat shall oppress them, they shall faint; and when it is hot, they shall perish from their place.

Their way goeth out by the way side; they tread upon the rough places, and perish.

They look to the ways of Thema; to the paths of Reicharabia they wait.

But they shall be ashamed when it is most sure, and shall be ashamed when they come to it.

For ye are now come unto me: and seeing sorrow, ye fear.

Did I also say, Bring ye hither, and of your substance give me?

And delivereth me out of the hand of the enemy, and delivereth me out of the hand of tyrants?

Teach me, and I will hold my peace: and that which I know not, instruct me.

Why do ye reprove right speech? Who is there among you who can punish them?

Ye devise words to punish, and ye pause words to make me despondent.

Ye fall upon a poor orphan, and dig pits for your neighbour.

But because ye have lifted up, look upon me, whether I will stand before you in lies.

Answer what is right; my answer will still remain right.

What matter if my tongue be false, and my mouth speak evil?

Chapter 7
Job’s lament over the misery of man.

Must not man always be at strife upon the earth, and his days be as the days of a hired servant?

As a servant longs for a shadow, and a hired servant for his work to be done, 3. So I have labored in vain for whole moons, and miserable nights have been many to me.

And when I lay down, I said, When shall I rise? And after that I reckoned when it was evening: for I was altogether an abomination to every man, until it was dark.

My flesh is worm-eaten and boil-eaten round about: my skin is shrivelled up, and is become ruinous.

My days have flown away lighter than a weaver’s bobbin, and have passed away, that there hath been no stopping.

Remember that my life is a wind, and mine eyes come not again to see the good.

and no living eye shall see me any more. Thine eyes look upon me; At this I perish.

A cloud passeth away, and fadeth away: so he that goeth down to hell cometh not up again.

And he cometh not again into his house, and his place knoweth him no more.

Therefore also I will not withhold my mouth; I will speak of the anguish of my heart, and I will testify of the affliction of my soul.

Am I then a sea, or a whale, that thou hast kept me thus?

When I have thought, my bed shall comfort me, my couch shall make me light; 14. when I speak to myself, thou terrifieth me with dreams, and makest me afraid, 15. My soul desireth to be hanged, and my bones to die.

I desire no more to live. Cease from me, for my days have been in vain.

What is a man, that thou esteemest him great, and art troubled with him?

Thou visitest him daily, and tryest him every hour.

Why dost thou not depart from me, and dost not cease from me, till I have swallowed up my spittle?

If I have sinned, what shall I do unto thee, O thou keeper of men? Why makest thou me to stumble upon thee, and art a burden unto myself?

And why forgivest thou not my iniquity, and takest not away my sin? For now will I lie down in the earth; and when they seek me to morrow, I shall not be there.

Then answered Bildad of Suah, and said:

How long wilt thou speak these things, and let the speech of thy mouth be so proud?
