When the day dawneth, the murderer riseth up, and slayeth the poor and needy: and by night he is as a thief.

The eye of the adulterer looketh on the darkness, and saith, Eye seeth me not; and covereth his face.

In darkness he breaketh in upon the houses. By day they hide themselves together, and shun the light.

For when the morning cometh, it is unto them as darkness: for he knoweth the terror of darkness.

He saileth lightly, as upon the waters: his substance is few in the land, and he treadeth not his vineyard.

Hell taketh away them that sin, as the heat and the drought consume the snow water.

The merciful shall be forgotten; his desire shall become wormwood; he shall be remembered no more; he shall be broken as a rotten tree.

He hath offended the lone that beareth not, and hath not done good to the widow.

And the mighty are drawn under him with his power. If he stand, he shall not be sure of his life.

He maketh him sure himself, that he may rely thereon: but his eyes are upon their doings.

They are exalted for a little season, and shall be destroyed, and subdued, and utterly cut off; and as the first blossom of the ears of corn they shall be cut off.

Is it not so? Well then, who will give me the lie, and prove that my speech is nothing?

Chapter 25
Before God, all men are sinners.

Then answered Bildad of Suah, and said:

Is not dominion and fear with him that maketh peace among his high ones?

Who shall number his men of war? And over whom will not his light go?

And how shall a man be righteous in the sight of God? And how shall a woman’s child be pure?

Behold, the moon shineth not yet, neither are the stars yet pure in his sight; 6. how much less a man, the maggot, and a man-child, the worm?

Chapter 26
Job praises God’s majesty much more gloriously than Bildad.

Job answered and said:
Secondly, whom wilt thou help? To him that hath no strength? Helpest thou him that hath no
strength in arms?

To whom givest thou counsel? To him that hath no wisdom? and showest thou a mighty man how he shall do it?

For whom speakest thou, and for whom goest forth thy breath?

The giants were afraid among the waters, and they that dwelt by them.

Hell is laid open before him, and destruction hath no covering.

He spreadeth out the midnight nowhere, and hangeth the earth upon nothing.

He gathereth the waters into his clouds, and the clouds are not rent under them.

he holds his chair and spreads his clouds before it.

He hath set a mark round about the waters, until the light pass away with the darkness.

The pillars of heaven tremble and are terrified at his rebuke.

Before his strength the sea is suddenly impetuous, and before his understanding the height of the sea is lifted up.

The heavens are made fair by his wind, and his hand prepareth the straight serpent.

Behold, this is the way of his doings: but of it we have heard a small word. But who shall understand the thunder of his power?

Chapter 27
Job, to save his innocence, holds the pious and hypocrite against each other.

And Job continued, and began his sayings, and said:

As God liveth, who hath not let my right go, and the Almighty, who hath afflicted my soul, 3. As long as my breath is in me, and the snorting of GOD is in my nostrils: 4. My lips shall speak no unrighteousness, and my tongue shall speak no deceit.

Far be it from me to justify you: until my end come, I will not depart from my godliness.

Of my righteousness which I have I will not depart: my conscience doth not bite me for all my life.

But mine enemy shall be found ungodly, and he that rebels against me unrighteous.

For what is the hope of the hypocrite, that he should be so stingy, and yet God should take away his soul?

do you think that GOD will hear his cry when fear comes upon him?

How can he delight in the Almighty, and call upon God?

I will teach you of the hand of GOD: and that which is with the Almighty I will not hide.

Behold, ye all think yourselves wise. Why then do ye pretend to such useless things?

This is the reward of a godless man with GOD, and the inheritance of tyrants, which they will take from the Almighty:

If he have many children, they shall be of the sword: and his seed shall not be full of bread.

His remnant shall be buried in death, and his widows shall not weep.

When he gathereth together money like earth, and gathereth together garments like glue, 17. He shall well prepare it: but the righteous shall put it on, and the innocent shall give out the money.

He buildeth his house like a spider, and maketh a shower like a keeper.

The rich man, when he lieth down, shall not carry it away: he shall open his eyes, and there shall be nothing.

Terrors shall overtake him as the waters: in the night the tempest shall take him away.

The east wind shall carry him away, and he shall go adrift: and the violence shall drive him out of his place.

He shall bring these things upon him, and shall not spare him: all things shall pass out of his hand.

They shall clap their hands over him, and hiss over him, because he hath been.

Chapter 28
Praise of wisdom to GOtt and man.

Silver hath its courses, and gold hath its place, where it is melted.

Iron is brought out of the earth, and ore is smelted out of stones.

There shall ever be an end of darkness, and someone shall at last find the slate hid deep.

And such a brook cometh up, that they that dwell therein lose their way thither: and it falleth again, and passeth away from among the people.

Fire also is brought up out of the ground beneath, when there is food growing up above.

Sapphires are found in many places, and nuggets of earth where there is gold.

no bird hath seen the path, no vulture’s eye hath seen it.

The proud children have not trodden upon it, neither have any lions trodden upon it.

And they lay hands on the rocks, and dig up the mountains.

Streams are plucked out of the rocks; and all that is good is seen of the eye.

Forbid the river of water, and bring to light that which is hid therein.

But where shall wisdom be found, and where is the place of understanding?

No man knoweth where it is, neither is it found in the land of the living.

The bottomless pit saith, She is not in me: and the sea saith, She is not with me.

Gold cannot be given for them, neither can silver be weighed to pay for them.

It is not like unto her ophiric gold, or precious onyx and sapphire.

Gold and jewels shall not be like her, neither shall gold change for her.

Ramoth and Gabi are not esteemed. Wisdom is to be weighed higher than pearls.

Topazius from Mohrenland is not equally esteemed to her, and the purest gold is not equally esteemed to her.
20: Whence then is wisdom, and where is the place of understanding?

It is hid from the eyes of all the living, even from the birds of the air.
Twenty-two: Damnation and death speak: We have heard with our ears their rumor.

God knoweth the way thereof, and knoweth the place thereof.

For he seeth the ends of the earth, and beholdeth all things under heaven.

And he made the wind his weight, and set the waters their measure, 26. For he made the rain a goal, and the lightning and the thunder a way, 27. Job recounts his previous bliss.

And Job lifted up his proverbs again, and said:

That I might be as in the former moons, in the days when God kept me, 3. When his lamp shined upon my head, and I walked by his light in darkness; 4. As I was in the days of my youth, when God’s secret was over my tabernacle; 5. While the Almighty was yet with me, and my children about me; 6. When I washed my steps in butter, and the rocks poured me rivers of oil; 7. And I went out unto the gate of the city, and made ready my seat in the street; 8. When the young men saw me, and hid themselves, and the old men were ashamed before me; 9. When the princes ceased to speak, and laid their hand upon their mouth; 10. When the voice of the princes was hid, and their tongue cleaved to the roof of their mouth.

For every ear that heard me blessed me, and every eye that saw me glorified me.

For I delivered the poor that cried, and the fatherless that had no helper.

The blessing of him that should destroy came upon me; and I rejoiced the heart of the widow.

Righteousness was my garment, which I put on like a skirt; and my right was my princely hat.
