came in unto thee, shall be mine, even as Reuben and Simeon.
  • And they which thou begettest after them shall be thine, and shall be called as their brethren in their inheritance.
  • And it came to pass, when I was come out of Mesopotamia, that Rachel died to me in the land of Canaan by the way of Ephrath, which was yet a highway: and I buried her there by the way of Ephrath, which is now called Bethlehem.
  • And Israel saw the sons of Joseph, and said, Who are these?
  • And Joseph said unto his father, They are my sons, which God hath given me here. And he said, Bring them hither unto me, that I may bless them.
  • For the eyes of Israel were dim with age, and could not well see. And he brought them unto him. And he kissed them, and embraced them.
  • And said unto Joseph, Behold, I have seen thy face, which I thought not of: and, lo, God hath made me to see thy seed also.
  • And Joseph took them from his bosom, and bowed himself to the earth toward his face.
  • And Joseph took them both, Ephraim in his right hand against Israel’s left hand, and Manasseh in his left hand against Israel’s right hand, and brought them unto him.
  • And Israel stretched out his right hand, and laid it upon the head of Ephraim the youngest, and his left hand upon the head of Manasseh: and he did so with his hands, knowing that Manasseh was the firstborn.
  • And he blessed Joseph, and said, God, before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked, God, who hath nourished me all my life unto this day,
  • The angel that delivered me from all evil, bless the children, that they may be called by my name, and by the name of my fathers, Abraham and Isaac; that they may grow and multiply upon the earth.
  • And when Joseph saw that his father laid his right hand upon Ephraim’s head, it displeased him: and Joseph took hold of his father’s hand, and turned it from Ephraim’s head unto Manasseh’s head,
  • And said unto him, Not so, my father: this is the firstborn, lay thy right hand upon his head.
  • But his father refused, and said: I know well, my son, I know well. This also shall be a nation, and shall be great: but his youngest brother shall be greater than he, and his seed shall be a great nation.
  • So he blessed them that day, and said, Whosoever shall bless any man in Israel, let him say, God set thee as Ephraim and Manasseh. And he set Ephraim before Manasseh.
  • And Israel said unto Joseph, Behold, I die; and God shall be with you, and shall bring you again unto the land of your fathers.
  • I have given thee a piece of land beside thy brethren, which I took out of the hand of the Amorites with my sword and with my bow.

    Chapter 49
    Jacob’s prophecy and farewell.
  • And Jacob called his sons, and said, Gather yourselves together, that I may tell you what shall befall you in the days to come.
  • Come ye in multitude, and give ear, ye children of Jacob, and hear your father Israel.
  • Reuben, my first son, thou art my strength, and my first power, the chief in sacrifice, and the chief in the kingdom.
  • He passed away as the waters. Thou shalt not be chief; For thou hast gone up to thy father’s bed; There thou hast defiled my bed with the going up.
  • The brothers Simeon and Levi their swords are murderous weapons.
  • Let not my soul enter into their council, neither let my glory be in their church: for in their anger they have slain the man, and in their wantonness they have corrupted the ox.
  • Cursed be their wrath, because it is fierce; and their fury, because it is vexatious. I will divide them in Jacob, and scatter them in Israel.
  • Judah, thou art he: thy brethren shall praise thee. Thy hand shall be upon the neck of thine enemies; Thy father’s children shall bow down to thee.
  • Judah is a young lion. Thou art come up, my son, by great victories. He hath bowed down and lain down like a lion, and like a lioness: who will rise up against him?
  • The sceptre shall not be taken away from Judah, nor a master from his feet, until the coming of the hero: and the nations shall cleave unto him.
  • He shall bind his colt to the vine, and the son of his ass to the noble branches. He shall wash his garment in wine, and his mantle in the blood of the vine.
  • His eyes are redder than wine, and his teeth whiter than milk.
  • Zebulun shall dwell at the fords of the sea, and at the fords of the ships, and shall abide at Sidon.
  • Issachar shall be a legged ass, and shall lie down between the borders.
  • And he saw the rest that it was good, and the land that it was pleasant: but he straitened his shoulders to bear, and became an interest-bearing servant.
  • Dan shall be a judge among his people, as another generation in Israel.
  • Dan shall become a serpent in the way, and an adder in the stile, and shall bite the horse in the heel, and his rider shall fall back.
  • O Lord, I wait for thy salvation!
  • Gad, armed, shall lead the army, and shall lead it about again.
  • From Asher cometh his fat bread, and he shall do favor to the kings.
  • naphthali is a fast stag and gives beautiful speech.
  • Joseph shall grow, he shall grow as at a spring. The daughters come forth in regiment.
  • And though the archers anger him, and war against him, and persecute him, 24. Yet his bow remaineth firm, and the arms of his hands strong, by the hands of the mighty one in Jacob. Out of them are come shepherds and stones in Israel.
  • From thy Father’s God thou art helped, and from the Almighty thou art blessed with blessings above from heaven, with blessings from beneath, with blessings in breasts and in bellies.
  • The blessings of thy father are greater than the blessings of my forefathers, according to the desire of the high ones of the world: and they shall come upon the head of Joseph, and upon the crown of Nazir among his brethren.
  • Benjamin is a ravening wolf: in the morning he shall devour the prey, but in the evening he shall divide the spoil.
  • These are the twelve tribes of Israel, all of them: and this is what their father spake unto them, when he blessed them, every one with a blessing.
  • And he commanded them, and said unto them: I am gathered unto my people: bury me with my fathers in the cave of the field of Ephron the Hittite,
  • In the twofold cave that is toward Mamre, in the land of Canaan, which Abraham bought, and the field, of Ephron the Hittite, for an inheritance.
  • And there they buried Abraham, and Sarah his wife. And there they buried Isaac, and Rebekah his wife. There also have I buried Leah,

  • And when Jacob had made an end of commanding his children, he put his feet together upon the bed, and passed away, and was gathered unto his people. Chap.

    Chapter 50
    Jacob is buried. Joseph dies.
  • And Joseph commanded his servants the physicians to anoint his father. And the physicians anointed Israel,
  • Until forty days were expired: for so long were the days of anointing. And the Egyptians wept over him seventy days.
  • And when the days of suffering were ended, Joseph spake unto Pharaoh’s servants, saying, If I have found grace in your sight, speak unto Pharaoh, and say:
  • My father hath taken an oath of me, saying, Behold, I die; bury me in my grave, which I have digged for myself in the land of Canaan. Now therefore I will go up, and bury my father, and come again.
  • And Pharaoh said, Go up, bury thy father, as thou swarest unto him.
  • So Joseph went up to bury his father. And there went up with him all Pharaoh’s servants, and the elders of his house, and all the elders of the land of Egypt, 8. And all Joseph’s household, and his brethren, and his father’s household. Only their children, and their flocks, and their herds, left they in the land of Goshen.
  • And they also went up with him chariots and horsemen, and were almost a great host.
  • And when they were come to the threshingfloor of Atad, which is on the other side Jordan, they mourned a very great and bitter lamentation: and he mourned for his father seven days.
  • And when the people of the land, the Canaanites, saw the lamentation at the threshingfloor of Atad, they said: The Egyptians have a great lamentation there. Wherefore the place of the Egyptians is called Lamentation, which is on the other side Jordan.
  • And his children did as he commanded them,
  • And they brought him into the land of Canaan, and buried him in the twofold cave of the field, which Abraham had bought with the field for the inheritance of Ephron the Hittite over against Mamre.
  • And when they had buried him, Joseph went again into Egypt with his brethren, and with all that went up with him to bury his father.
  • And Joseph’s brethren were afraid, because their father was dead, and said: Joseph will be angry with us, and will repay us for all the evil we have done him.
