Luther Bible 1545 (English)
children of Israel out of Egypt?
  • He said: I will be with thee. And this shall be a sign unto thee, that I have sent thee: When thou hast brought forth my people out of Egypt, then ye shall sacrifice unto God in this mountain.
  • And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and speak unto them: The GOOD of your fathers hath sent me unto you, and they shall say unto me: What is his name? what shall I say to them?
  • And God said unto Moses, I will be who I will be. And said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I will be he that sent me unto you.
  • And God said unto Moses, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob, hath sent me unto you. This is my name for ever, that I may be remembered for ever.
  • Go therefore, gather together the elders of Israel, and say unto them: The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob, hath appeared unto me, saying, I have visited you, and have seen that which is done unto you in Egypt.
  • And I said, I will bring you out of the affliction of Egypt into the land of the Canaanites, and
the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, into the land that floweth with milk and honey.
  • And when they hear thy voice, then thou and the elders of Israel shall go in unto the king of Egypt, and say unto him, The LORD God of Egypt hath called us. Now therefore let us go three days’ journey into the wilderness, to sacrifice unto the LORD our God.
  • But I know that the king of Egypt will not let you go without a strong hand.
  • For I will stretch out my hand, and smite Egypt with all manner of wonders which I will do within. After that he will let you go.
  • And I will give grace unto this people in the sight of the Egyptians; and when ye go forth, ye shall not go forth empty;
  • But every woman shall require of her neighbour and of her household vessels of silver and of gold, and raiment; and ye shall put them upon your sons and upon your daughters, and shall take them of the Egyptians.
    (Exodus)
    Chapter 4
Moses is strengthened in his profession with the gift of performing miracles.
  • And Moses answered and said, Behold, they will not believe me, nor hear my voice, but will say, The LORD hath not appeared unto thee.
  • And the LORD said unto him, What is this that thou hast in thine hand? And he said, A staff.
  • And he said, Cast him from thee unto the earth. And he cast him from him; and he became a serpent. And Moses fled from before it.
  • And the LORD said unto him, Put forth thy hand, and catch it by the tail. And he put forth his hand, and held it: and it became a rod in his hand.
  • Therefore shall they believe that the LORD God of their fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob, hath appeared unto thee.
  • And the LORD said unto him, Put thine hand into thy bosom. And he put it into his bosom, and drew it out: and, behold, it was leprous as snow.
  • And he said, Put her again into the bosom. And he put them again into his bosom, and drew them out: and, behold, they were again as his other flesh.
  • If therefore they believe thee not, nor hear thy voice at one sign, yet shall they believe thy voice at the other sign.
  • And if they will not believe these two signs, nor hear thy voice, then take the water out of the river, and pour it upon the dry land; and the same water which thou hast taken out of the river shall become blood upon the dry land.
  • And Moses said unto the LORD, O my LORD, I have not been well spoken ever since thou spakest unto thy servant: for I am slow of speech, and slow of tongue.
  • And the LORD said unto him, Who made man’s mouth, or who made him dumb, or deaf, or seeing, or blind? Have not I done it, the LORD?
  • Go thy way therefore: I will be with thy mouth, and teach thee what thou shalt say.
  • And Moses said, My Lord, send whom thou wilt send.
  • And the LORD was very wroth with Moses, and said, Know I not that Aaron thy brother, of the tribe of Levi, is eloquent? And, behold, he shall go out to meet thee, and when he seeth thee, he shall rejoice with his heart.
  • And thou shalt speak unto him, and put the words in his mouth. And I will be with thy mouth, and with his mouth, and teach you; what ye shall do.
  • And he shall speak unto the people for thee; he shall be thy mouth, and thou shalt be his God.
  • And take this rod in thine hand, that thou mayest do signs.
  • And Moses went, and came again to Jethro his brother in law, and said unto him, Let me go, I pray thee, that I may return unto my brethren which are in Egypt, and see whether they be yet alive. And Jethro said unto him, Go in peace.
  • And the LORD said unto him in Midian, Go, return into Egypt: for the people are dead which sought thy life.
  • So Moses took his wife and his sons, and led them on an ass, and returned into the land of
Egypt; and he took the rod of God in his hand.
  • And the LORD said unto Moses, See thou return into Egypt, and do all the wonders in Pharaoh’s sight, which I have delivered into thine hand: and I will harden his heart, that he will not let the people go.
  • And thou shalt say unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Israel is my firstborn son; 23. And I command thee that thou send my son away, and that he serve me. If thou refuse, I will slay thy firstborn son.
  • And when he was come to the inn, the LORD met him, and would have killed him.

  • And Moses told Aaron all the words of the LORD which he had sent him, and all the signs which he commanded him.
  • And they went and gathered together all the elders of the children of Israel.
  • And Aaron spake all the words which the LORD spake unto Moses, and did the signs before the people.
  • And the people believed. And when they heard that the LORD had visited the children of Israel, and had looked upon their affliction, they bowed themselves, and worshipped.
    (Exodus)
    Chapter 5
Moses is despised by Pharaoh and the people are even more frightened.
  • And Moses and Aaron went in, and said unto Pharaoh, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Let my people go, that they may feast in the wilderness.
  • And Pharaoh said, Who is the LORD, whose voice I must hear, and let Israel go? I know not of the LORD, neither will I let Israel go.
  • And they said, God the Eberian hath called us: now therefore let us go three days’ journey into the wilderness, and sacrifice unto the LORD our God, lest pestilence or sword befall us.
  • And the king of Egypt said unto them: Thou, Moses, and Aaron, why will ye set the people free from their work? Go to your service.
  • And Pharaoh said, Behold, the people are already too many in the land, and ye will yet call them to feast from their service.
  • Therefore Pharaoh commanded the same day the captains of the people, and their officers, saying:
  • No more shall ye gather straw unto the people, and give them to burn brick, as heretofore: let them go and gather straw themselves;
  • And the number of the bricks which they have made hitherto shall ye lay up for them, and shall not diminish: for they go idle, therefore they cry, and say: We will go and sacrifice unto our God.
  • Press the people with labour, that they may work, and not turn aside to false speech.
  • And the reeves of the people and their officers went out, and said unto the people, Thus saith Pharaoh, They will not give you straw.
  • Go ye yourselves, gather you straw where ye may find it: but of your labour nothing shall be diminished.
  • And the people scattered themselves throughout all the land of Egypt, to gather stubble, that they might have straw.
  • And the reeves drove them, and said: Fulfil your day’s work, as when ye had straw.
  • And the officers of the children of Israel, whom Pharaoh’s princes had set over them, were smitten, and it was said unto them, Why have ye not done your appointed day’s work this day, nor yesterday, as ye did before?
  • And the officers of the children of Israel went in, and cried unto Pharaoh, Wherefore wilt thou go thus with thy servants?
  • They shall not give straw unto thy servants, neither shall they make the bricks that are appointed for us: and, behold, thy servants are smitten, and thy people must be sinners.
