learn to fight any more.

Come ye therefore from the house of Jacob, and let us walk in the light of the LORD.

But thou hast forsaken thy people, the house of Jacob: for they do more than they that are against the east, and are as the Philistines, and do much with strange children.

Their land is full of silver and gold, and there is no end of their treasures: their land is full of horses, and there is no end of their chariots.

Their land also is full of idols, and they worship the work of their hands, which their fingers have made.

there the riffraff stoopeth, there the nobles humble themselves. You will not forgive them.

Go into the rock, and hide thyself in the earth, from the fear of the LORD, and from his glorious majesty.

For every high eye shall be abased, and every high man shall stoop: but the LORD alone shall be high in that day.

For the day of the LORD of hosts shall pass upon all that is proud, and upon all that is high, and upon all that is exalted, and shall be humbled,

And over all the tall and lofty cedars of Lebanon, and over all the oaks of Bashan, 14. Over all the high mountains, and over all the lofty hills,

Over all high towers, and over all strong walls,

Over all the ships in the sea, and over all the delicious work, 17. That all the high places of men should bow down, and humble themselves which are high; and that the LORD alone should be high at that time.

And the idols shall be utterly destroyed.

And they shall walk in the caves of the rocks, and in the clefts of the earth, for the fear of the LORD, and for his glorious majesty, when he shall arise to terrify the earth.

In that day shall every man cast away his idols of silver and of gold, which he had made for him to worship, into the holes of moles and bats,

That he may grovel in the clefts of the stones and in the crags for the fear of the LORD, and for his glorious majesty, when he shall arise to terrify the earth.

Cease therefore from the man that hath breath in his nostrils: for ye know not how highly he is esteemed.

Chapter 3
Punishment of ruthlessness and arrogance.

For, behold, the LORD of hosts shall take from Jerusalem and from Judah every store, all the store of bread, and all the store of water,

strong men and men of war, judges, prophets, soothsayers, and old men, 3. captains over fifty, and honest men, and counsellors, and wise workmen, and prudent orators.

And I will give them young men to be rulers, and children shall rule over them.

And the people shall drudge, one against another, and every man against his neighbour: and the younger shall be proud against the old, and a loose man against the upright.

Then shall one seize his brother out of his father’s house: Thou hast clothes; be our prince, help thou this accident!

And he shall swear in that day, and say, I am no physician; there is neither bread nor raiment in mine house: set me not over the people.

For Jerusalem is fallen, and Judah is fallen, because their tongue and their doings are against the LORD, to resist the eyes of his majesty.

Their nature hath they no secret; they glory in their sin, as they did in Sodom, and hide it not.
Woe to their soul! For thereby they bring all calamity upon themselves.

Preach of the righteous, that they do well: for they shall eat the fruit of their works.

But woe unto the wicked, because they are wicked: and it shall be recompensed unto them according to their deserts.

Children are drivers of my people, and wives rule over them. My people, your comforters deceive you and destroy the way you should go.

But the LORD standeth in judgment, and hath stood to judge the nations.

And the LORD cometh to judgment with the elders of his people, and with his princes. For ye have spoiled the vineyard, and the spoil of the poor is in your house.

Why do ye tread down my people, and break in pieces the persons of the wretched? saith the LORD of hosts.

And the LORD saith, Because the daughters of Zion are proud, and walk with their necks lifted up, and their faces made up, and they walk, and they walk with their tails down, and they have fine shoes upon their feet,

Then shall the LORD make the crown of the daughters of Zion bald, and the LORD shall take away their jewels.

In that day shall the LORD take away the ornaments of the precious shoes, and the harness, and the clasps,

the chains, the bracelets, the bonnets,

the tinsel, the tresses, the laces, the muslins, the earrings, 21. The rings, the hair bands,

The ceremonial garments, the cloaks, the veils, the bags,

the mirrors, the collars, the braids, the smocks

And there shall be stench for a good smell, and a loose band for a girdle, and a bald head for a frizzy hair, and for a broad mantle a tight sackcloth; all these things instead of thy beauty.

Thy rabble shall fall by the sword, and thy warriors in battle.

And her gates shall mourn and lament, and she shall sit miserable upon the earth, Ch. 4, v. 1. That seven wives shall take hold of one man at that time, and say: We will feed and clothe ourselves; let us only be called by thy name, that our reproach may be taken from us.

Chapter 4
Prophecy of Christo.

In that day shall the branch of the LORD be sweet and precious, and the fruit of the earth glorious and comely in them that are preserved in Israel.

And whosoever shall be left in Zion, and shall remain in Jerusalem, he shall be called holy, every one that is written among the living in Jerusalem.

Then shall the LORD wash the filthiness of the daughters of Zion, and drive out the blood of Jerusalem from her, by the Spirit that judgeth, and kindleth a fire.

And the LORD shall make over all the tabernacle of mount Zion, and where it is gathered, clouds and smoke by day, and the brightness of fire burning by night. For there shall be a screen over all that is glorious;

And shall be a tabernacle for a shadow of the day from the heat, and a refuge and a hiding place from the weather and rain.

Chapter 5
From the Jewish vineyard.

Come, I will sing to my beloved a song of my cousin’s from his vineyard. My beloved has a vineyard in a fat place.

And he fenced it, and covered it with heaps of stones, and put noble vines therein. And he built a tower in it, and digged a winepress in it, and waited for it to bring forth grapes. But he brought forth grapes.

Now therefore judge, ye citizens of Jerusalem, and ye men of Judah, between me and my vineyard.

What more shall be done in my vineyard, that I have not done in it? Why then hath he brought forth seedlings, when I waited for him to bring forth grapes?

Now therefore, I will shew you what I will do unto my vineyard. The wall thereof shall be taken away, that it may be desolate; and the fence thereof shall be broken down, that it may be trodden under foot.

I will leave it desolate, and it shall not be cut, neither chopped, but thorns and briers shall grow upon it: and I will command the clouds that they rain not upon it.

Now the vineyard of the LORD of hosts is the house of Israel; and the men of Judah are his tender flock. He waiteth for justice, behold, it is drudgery; for righteousness, behold, it is lamentation.

Woe unto them that set house against house, and bring one field to another, until there be no more room, that they alone may possess the land!

It is in the ears of the LORD of hosts: what is the matter, but that the many houses shall be desolate, and the great and the good shall stand waste?

For ten acres of vineyard shall yield but one bucket, and one bushel of seed shall yield but one bushel.

Woe unto them that rise up early in the morning to be diligent to drink, and sit up to night, to be heated with wine,

And they have harps, and psalteries, and timbrels, and pipes, and wine, in their good pleasure, and look not on the work of the LORD, nor consider the business of his hands.

Therefore shall my people be taken away unawares; and their nobles shall hunger, and their people thirst.

Therefore hath hell opened wide the soul, and opened the jaws without measure, that both her glorious and her vile, both her rich and her merry, may go down, 15. That every man should stoop, and every man be humbled, and the eyes of the proud be humbled,

But let the LORD of hosts be exalted in judgment, and let God the Holy One be sanctified in righteousness.

Then shall the lambs feed in that place, and the strangers shall feed in the wilderness of fatness.

Woe unto them that cleave together with loose cords to do iniquity, and with chariot ropes to sin,

Saying: Let his work come quickly and speedily, that we may see it; let it come, and let the stroke of the Holy One come upon Israel, that we may know it.

Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that turn darkness into light, and light into darkness; that turn sour into sweet, and sweet into sour!
