(Epistle on the day of the Visitation.)

And there shall come up a rod from the tribe of Jesse, and a branch from his root shall bring forth fruit.

Upon whom shall rest the Spirit of the LORD, the Spirit of wisdom, and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel, and of strength, the Spirit of knowledge, and of the fear of the LORD.

And his smelling shall be in the fear of the LORD. He shall not judge according to that his eyes see, nor punish according to that his ears hear,

But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and with judgment shall he punish the wretched of the earth: and with the rod of his mouth shall he smite the earth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked.

Righteousness shall be the girdle of his loins, and faith the girdle of his kidneys.

The wolves shall dwell with the lambs, and the pardel shall lie with the rams. A little boy shall drive calves and young lions and fatlings together.

Cows and bears shall go by the pasture, and their young shall lie down together: and lions shall eat straw like oxen.

And an infant shall have his delight in the hole of the adder, and a weaned man shall put his hand into the den of the basilisk.

There shall no man hurt nor destroy in my holy mountain: for the land is full of the knowledge of the LORD, as it is covered with the waters of the sea.

And it shall come to pass in that day, that the root of Jesse, which is for a panoply to the
nations, shall be inquired of by the heathen; and his rest shall be honour.

And the LORD shall stretch out his hand in that day the second time, to conquer the remnant of his people that are left of the Assyrians, and of the Egyptians, and of the Pathros, and of the Moors, and of the Elamites, and of Sinear, and of Hamath, and of the isles of the sea, 12. And he shall set a standard among the heathen, and gather together the outcasts of Israel, and shall bring the dispersed of Judah by multitude out of the four places of the earth.

And the envy of Ephraim shall cease, and the enemies of Judah shall be cut off, that Ephraim envy not Judah, and Judah be not against Ephraim.

And they shall be upon the neck of the Philistines toward the west, and shall spoil all them that dwell toward the east. Edom and Moab shall fold their hands against them. And the children of Ammon shall be obedient.

And the LORD shall destroy the river of the sea in Egypt, and shall cause his hand to pass over the waters with his strong wind, and shall smite the seven rivers, that men may pass through with shoes.

And there shall be a course for the remnant of his people that remain of the Assyrians, as it was to Israel when they came out of the land of Egypt.

Chapter 12
Song of thanksgiving for the good deeds of the Messiah.

In that day shalt thou say, I thank thee, O Lord, that thou wast angry with me, and that thine anger is turned, and thou hast comforted me.

Behold, God is my salvation; I am safe, and fear not: for the Lord God is my strength, and my psalm, and is my salvation.

ye shall draw water with joy out of the wells of salvation.

And ye shall say in that day, Give thanks unto the LORD, preach his name, make known his doings among the nations, declare how great is his name.

Sing ye praises unto the LORD: for he hath shewed himself glorious: let it be known throughout all the earth.

Rejoice and be glad, O inhabitant of Zion: for the Holy One of Israel is great with thee.

Chapter 13
Destruction of the Babylonian Empire.

This is the burden over Babylon, which Isaiah the son of Amoz saw: 2. Cast up your banners upon the high mountains; cry out against them with confidence; lift up your hands, let them enter in through the gates of the princes.

I have commanded my holy ones, and called my strong ones to my wrath, which rejoice in my glory.

There is a shout of a multitude upon the mountains, as of a great people; a shout as of a tumult of the kingdoms of the heathen gathered together. The LORD of hosts maketh ready an army to battle,

Who come from far countries, from the end of heaven, even the LORD himself, with the witness of his wrath, to destroy the whole land.

Hasten: for the day of the LORD is at hand; it cometh as a desolation from the Almighty.

Therefore shall all hands be idle, and all men’s hearts shall be cowardly.

Terrors, and fears, and sorrows, shall come upon them: they shall be as afraid as a woman in childbirth: one shall be afraid of another: their faces shall be red with fire.

For, behold, the day of the LORD cometh cruelly, wrathfully, fiercely, to destroy the land, and to cut off sinners out of it.

For the stars of heaven and his Orion shine not brightly: the sun riseth darkly, and the moon seemeth dim.

I will punish the earth for its wickedness, and the wicked for their iniquity; and I will put an end to the pride of the proud, and will humble the arrogance of the mighty, 12. That a man should be more precious than fine gold, and a man more precious than gold pieces of Ophir.

Therefore will I move heaven, and the earth shall shake out of her place with the fury of the LORD of hosts, and with the day of his wrath.

And she shall be as a roe deer driven away, and as a flock without a shepherd: and every man shall return to his own people, and every man shall flee to his own land, 15. Because he that is found there shall be stabbed, and he that is found there shall fall by the sword.

Their children also shall be broken in pieces before their eyes, and their houses plundered, and their wives ravished.

For, behold, I will raise up the Medes upon them, which seek not silver, nor ask for gold, 18. But to shoot the young men with bows, and not to have mercy on the fruit of the womb, nor to spare the children.

So Babylon, the most beautiful of kingdoms, the glorious splendor of the Chaldeans, shall be turned back from God, as Sodom and Gomorrah,

That they dwell therein no more, neither abide therein any more, neither do the Arabians make tents there, nor do the shepherds put up fences there,

But zihim shall encamp there, and their houses shall be full of ohim, and ostriches shall dwell there, and spirits of the field shall leap there,

And owls shall sing in their palaces, and dragons in the merry castles. And their time shall come sheerly, and their days shall not tarry.
Ch. 14, v. 1: For the LORD will have mercy upon Jacob, and will choose Israel yet more, and will set them in their own land. And strangers shall join themselves unto them, and cleave unto the house of Jacob.

And the nations shall receive them, and bring them into their place, and the house of Israel shall possess them in the land of the LORD for bondmen and bondwomen: and they shall take them captives of whom they were captives, and shall rule over their beaters.

Chapter 14
Fall of the Babylonians and Assyrians.

And in that day when the LORD shall give thee rest from thy mourning and from thy suffering, and from the hard service wherein thou hast been,

Then shalt thou speak such a proverb against the king of Babylon, saying, How is the driver finished, and the interest is ended?

The LORD hath broken the rod of the wicked, the rod of the rulers, 6. Which smote the nations in fury without ceasing, and ruled with fury over the heathen, and persecuted without mercy.

Now therefore let all the earth rest, and be still, and rejoice.

The fir trees also rejoice over thee, and the cedars of Lebanon, saying, Because thou liest, no man cometh up to cut us off.

The hell that was below trembled at thy coming. She hath raised up the dead unto thee, all the goats of the earth, and hath caused all the kings of the heathen to rise from their seats, 10. And they shall all speak one to another, and say unto thee, Thou also art smitten, as we are smitten; and it shall be unto thee as it is unto us.

Thy glory is gone down to hell with the sound of thy harps. Moths shall be thy bed, and worms thy covering.

How art thou fallen from heaven, O beautiful morning star! How art thou fallen to the earth, who didst weaken the heathen!

Thou hast thought in thine heart, saying, I will ascend into heaven, and will exalt my throne above the stars of God;

I will sit upon the mount of the congregation on the side toward the north: I will pass over the high clouds, and be like unto the most High.

yea, to hell thou goest, to the side of the pit.

He that beholdeth thee shall look upon thee, and behold thee, and say, Is this the man that made the world to tremble, and the kingdoms to shake?

Who made the earth a desolation, and brake in pieces the cities that were therein, and delivered not his captives?

Though all the kings of the heathen lie together with honour, every one in his own house; 19. But thou art
