in the seventh year he shall go forth free.

If he come without a wife, he shall go forth without a wife. But if he come with a wife, his wife shall go out with him.

And if his lord have given him a wife, and have begotten sons or daughters, then the wife and the children shall be his lord’s: but he shall go forth without a wife.

And the servant saith, I love my lord, and my wife, and my child; I will not go free, 6. Then let his lord bring him before the gods, and hold him to the door, or to the post, and pierce his ear with an awl; and let him be his servant for ever.

If a man sell his daughter to be a maid, she shall not go out as the servants.

But if she please not her lord, and will not help her to marriage, then he shall give her in marriage. But he hath no power to sell her among a strange people, because he hath spurned her.

But if he entrust her unto his son, he shall do daughter’s right unto her.

But if he give him another, he shall not break off her food, nor her covering, nor her matrimony.

If he do not these three, she shall go out free without ransom.

Whosoever smiteth a man to death shall surely be put to death.

And if he have not pursued him, but God hath caused him to fall into his hands, I will appoint thee a place whither he shall flee.

But if any man do wickedly to his neighbour, and slay him with guile, thou shalt take him from mine altar, and put him to death.

Whosoever shall smite his father or his mother shall surely be put to death.

Whosoever stealeth a man, and selleth him to be found with him, he shall surely be put to death.

Whosoever curseth father or mother shall surely be put to death.

When men quarrel together, and one smiteth another with a stone, or with his fist, he dieth not, but lieth in bed:

If he come up, and go out with his staff, he that smote him shall be guiltless, but he shall not pay him that which he hath omitted, neither give him the physician’s fee.

Whosoever shall smite his manservant or his maidservant with a rod, that he die under his hands, he shall be punished for it.

But if he tarry a day or two, he shall not be punished for it: for it is his money.

If a man be wicked, and hurt a woman with child, that her fruit be taken away, and no hurt be done unto her; then he shall be punished for money, as much as the woman’s husband shall lay upon him; and he shall give it according to the knowledge of the teidings.

But if it come to her hurt, he shall let go soul for soul,

an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, a hand for a hand, a foot for a foot, Twenty-five. Burn after burn, wound after wound, bump after bump.

If any man smite his servant or his handmaid in the eye, and destroy it, he shall let them go free about the eye.

Likewise, if he knock out a tooth of his manservant, or of his maidservant, he shall let them go free for the tooth.

If an ox thrust a man or a woman, and he die, then the ox shall be stoned, and his flesh shall not be eaten: then the master of the ox shall be guiltless.

And if the ox be a stallion before, and it be told his master, and he keep him not, and kill any man or woman thereby, then the ox shall be stoned, and his master shall die.

But if any money be laid upon him, he shall give to redeem his life whatsoever shall be laid upon him.

And the same shall be done unto him, if he thrust a son or a daughter.

And if he thrust a manservant or a maidservant, he shall give thirty shekels of silver unto their master, and the ox shall be stoned.

If any man dig a pit, or dig a pit, and cover it not, and an ox or an ass fall therein,

Then the lord of the pit shall pay the other again with money: and the carcase shall be his.

And if any man’s ox kill another ox, and it die, then they shall sell the living ox, and divide the money, and divide the carcase also.

And if it be known that the ox was a stallion before, and his master keep him not, then he shall recompense one ox for another, and have the carcase.

Chapter 22
Punishment of theft and other sins,

If any man steal an ox or a sheep, and kill it, or sell it, he shall restore five oxen for an ox, and four sheep for a sheep.

If a thief be taken to break in, and be beaten to death, let no judgment of blood be passed upon him.

But when the sun is risen upon him, then shall the judgment of blood be let go. But a thief shall make restitution. If he have nothing, let him be sold for his theft.

And if the theft be found with him alive, whether it be ox, ass, or sheep, he shall restore it double.

If a man hurt a field or vineyard, and let his cattle hurt another man’s field, he shall make restitution of the best of his field or vineyard.

If a fire come out, and take the thorns, and burn the sheaves, or the corn that is yet standing, or the field, he that kindled the fire shall make restitution.

If a man keep money or goods for his neighbour, and it be stolen out of his house, and the thief be found, he shall give it again double.

But if the thief be not found, then the landlord shall be brought before the gods, whether he have not laid his hand upon his neighbour’s goods.

If a man owe another any trespass, whether it be oxen, or asses, or sheep, or raiment, or any thing that is lost, both their things shall come before the gods. Whom the gods condemn, he shall restore it to his neighbor in two parts.

If a man keep an ass, or an ox, or a sheep, or any beast, for his neighbour, and it die, or be hurt, or be driven away from him, that no man see it,

Then they shall take an oath with the LORD, whether he lay not his hand upon his neighbour’s goods; and the lord of the manor shall accept it, that he pay not.

But if a thief steal it from him, he shall pay it unto his lord.

But if it be torn, he shall bring testimony of it, and not pay.

If any man borrow it of his neighbour, and be hurt, or die, that his lord be not with him, he shall pay it.

But if his lord be with him, then he shall not pay it, if he hath paid it for his money.

If any man persuade a virgin that is not yet betrothed, and put her to sleep, he shall give her her morning gift, and have her to wife.

And if her father refuse to give her unto him, then he shall weigh the money that is due unto a virgin for a morning gift.

Thou shalt not suffer the sorceresses to live.

Whosoever shall put any beast to sleep shall surely be put to death.

Whosoever sacrificeth unto gods, but unto the LORD only, let him be accursed, 21. Thou shalt not oppress the strangers, neither shalt thou oppress them: for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt.

Ye shall not offend widows and fatherless.

If thou shalt offend them, they shall cry unto me, and I will hear their cry; 24. Then shall my wrath be kindled, and I will slay you with the sword, and your wives shall be widows, and your children fatherless.

When thou lendest money unto my people, which are poor with thee, thou shalt not press him to any hurt, neither shalt thou lay usury upon him.

If thou take a garment of thy neighbour for a pledge, thou shalt restore it unto him before the sun go down.

For his garment is the covering of his skin, wherein he sleepeth. But if he shall cry unto me, I will hear him: for I am merciful.

Thou shalt not curse the gods, neither shalt thou blaspheme the ruler of thy people.

Thy abundance and thy tears shalt thou not pardon. Thy first son shalt thou give me.

So shalt thou do also unto thy bullock and thy sheep. Seven days let it be with its mother, and on the eighth day give it to me.

Ye shall be holy men before me: therefore ye shall not eat flesh torn of beasts in the field, but ye shall cast it to the dogs.

Chapter 23
Of festivals and holidays.

Thou shalt not believe a false accusation, that thou hast assisted an ungodly man, and hast been a false witness.

Thou shalt not follow the multitude to evil, nor answer in judgment, to turn aside from the multitude.

Thou shalt not adorn the lowly in his cause.

If thou meet thine enemy’s ox or ass, and he err, thou shalt bring him again.

When thou seest the ass that hateth thee lying under his burden, take heed, and leave him not; but willingly forfeit thine own, for his sake.

Thou shalt not bend the law of thy poor in his cause.

Be thou far from falsehood. Thou shalt not slay the innocent and the righteous: for I will not suffer the wicked to
