  • And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the LORD appeared unto Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into the land of Egypt, and tarry there until I tell thee: for it is present that Herod seeketh to destroy the young child.
  • And he arose, and took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into the land of Egypt.
  • And he abode there until after the death of Herod, that it might be fulfilled which the LORD
    spake by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son.
  • And when Herod saw that he was deceived of the wise men, he was very wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and all their borders, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently learned of the wise men.
  • Then is fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying: 18. There was a cry in the mountains, and much wailing, and weeping, and weeping: Rachel wept for her children, and would not be comforted; for they were consumed.
  • And when Herod was dead, behold, the angel of the LORD appeared unto Joseph in a dream in the land of Egypt.
  • And said. Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel: for they are dead which sought the young child’s life.
  • And he arose, and took the young child and his mother, and came into the land of Israel.
  • And when he heard that Archelaus was king in the land of Judaea instead of Herod his father, he feared to come thither. And in a dream he received commandment from God, and went into the places of the land of Galilee.
  • And he came and dwelt in the city that is called Nazareth, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets: He shall be called Nazarene.

    Chapter 3
  • at that time John the Baptist came and preached in the wilderness of the land of Judah 2. Saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
  • And he is he of whom the prophet Isaiah spake, saying: There is a voice of a preacher in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the LORD, and make his paths straight.
  • And he, John, had a garment of camel’s hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey.
  • And there went out unto him the city of Jerusalem, and all the land of Judah, and all the countries of Jordan.
  • And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins.
  • And when he saw many Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said unto them: Ye vipers, who hath shewed you that ye shall escape the wrath to come?
  • Take heed, do righteous fruits of repentance.
  • Think not that ye will say among yourselves, We have Abraham for a father. I say to you: God is able to raise up children for Abraham from these stones.
  • The axe is laid unto the root of the trees. Therefore every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
  • I baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is stronger than I, to whom neither am I sufficient to bear his shoes: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire.
  • And he hath his shovel in his hand; he shall sweep his threshingfloor, and gather the wheat into his barn: but the chaff shall he burn with everlasting fire.
  • At that time came JEsus from Galilee unto John by Jordan, to be baptized of him.
  • But John rebuked him, saying: I have need that I should be baptized of thee, and thou comest to me?
  • And Jesus answered and said unto him, Let it be so now: so it behoveth us to fulfil all righteousness. And he suffered him to do it.
  • And when JEsus was baptized, he came up straightway out of the water; and, behold, the heaven was opened upon him. And John saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and coming upon him.
  • And, behold, a voice from heaven said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

    Chapter 4
  • Then was JEsus led of the Spirit into the wilderness, that he might be tempted of the devil.
  • And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he hungered.
  • And the tempter came unto him, and said, If thou be the Son of God, let these stones be made bread.
  • And he answered and said, It is written: Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
  • And the devil brought him with him into the holy city, and set him upon the pinnacle of the temple.
  • And said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, let thee down: for it is written: He shall
    command his angels concerning thee, and they shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.
  • Then said JEsus unto him, Again, it is also written: Thou shalt not tempt thy Lord God.
  • Again the devil led him up into a very high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them.
  • And said unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.
  • Then said JEsus unto him, Remove thyself from me, Satan. For it is written: Thou shalt worship God thy Lord, and him only shalt thou serve.
  • And the devil left him: and, behold, the angels came and ministered unto him.
  • When therefore Jesus heard that John was delivered up, he departed into Galilee.
  • And he left the city of Nazareth, and came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the borders of Zabulon and Nephthalim,
  • That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying: 15. The land of Zabulon, and the land of Nephthalim, by the way of the sea, on the other side Jordan, and Gentile Galilee,
  • The people that sat in darkness have seen a great light; and they that sat in the place and shadow of death, unto them hath a light dawned.
  • From that time forth began JEsus to preach, saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
  • And as JEsus went by the sea of Galilee, he saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting their nets into the sea: for they were fishers.
  • And he said unto them: Follow me; I will make you fishers of men.
  • And soon they left their nets, and followed him.
  • And as he passed on from thence, he saw two other brethren, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in the ship with Zebedee their father, mending their nets: and he called them.
  • Soon they left the ship and their father and followed him.
  • And JE went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people.
  • And the fame of him went throughout all Syria. And they brought unto him all manner of sick persons, afflicted with divers diseases and torments, the possessed, the moonstruck, and the palsied: and he healed them all.
  • And there followed him a great multitude out of Galilee, and out of the ten cities, and out of Jerusalem, and out of the land of Judaea, and beyond Jordan.

    Chapter 5
  • And when he saw the people, he went up into a mountain, and sat down; and his disciples came unto him.
  • And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying:
  • Blessed are they which are poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
  • Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
  • Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
  • Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.
  • Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
  • Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
  • Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.
  • Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
  • Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you, when they lie against you, because of me.
  • Be glad and of good cheer: ye shall be well rewarded in heaven. For so they persecuted the prophets that were before you.
  • Ye are the salt of the earth. Wherefore if salt be made foolish, wherewith shall it be made
    salty? It is good for nothing henceforth, except that men cast it out, and tread it down.
  • ye are the light of the world. It may not be hidden the city that is on a mountain.
  • Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but upon a candlestick; and it shall shine unto all that are in the house.
  • Let your light therefore shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
  • Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets. I have not come to abolish, but to fulfill.
  • For I say unto you: Verily, till heaven and earth pass away, not the least letter, nor tittle, of the law shall pass away, till all be done.
  • Whosoever therefore shall destroy one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
