Luther Bible 1545 (English)
was wroth, and sent forth his armies, and slew those murderers, and burned their city.
  • Then said he unto his servants: The wedding is ready, but the guests were not worthy.
  • Go ye therefore into the highways, and invite to the marriage whom ye find.
  • And the servants went out into the streets, and gathered together whom they found, both evil and good. And the tables were all filled.
  • And the king went in to see the guests, and saw a man there that had no wedding garment on, 12. And said unto him, Friend, how camest thou in, and hast no wedding garment on? And he held his peace.
  • And the king said unto his servants, Bind his hands and his feet, and cast him out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth;
  • For many are called, but few are chosen.
  • Then the Pharisees went and held a council, as they caught him in his speech.
  • And they sent unto him their disciples with Herod’s servants, saying: Master, we know that
thou art true, and teachest the way of God aright, and askest after no man: for thou regardest not the reputation of men.
  • Therefore tell us, what thinkest thou? Is it right to give interest to the emperor, or not?
  • And when JEsus perceived their wickedness, he said, Ye hypocrites, why tempt ye me?
  • Give me the coin of interest. And they offered him a penny.
  • And he said unto them: Whose is the image and the superscription?
  • And they said unto him, The emperor’s. And he said unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and unto GOD the things that are GOD’s.
  • And when they heard it, they marvelled, and left him, and went away.
  • And the same day there came unto him the Sadducees, which say that there is no resurrection, and asked him
  • And they said: Master, Moses said, If a man die, and have not children, his brother shall marry his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.
  • Now there were with us seven brethren. The first one married and died, and because he had no seed, he left his wife to his brother.
  • The like of the second, and of the third, unto the seventh.
  • Last of all, after all, the woman also died.
  • Now in the resurrection, whose wife shall she be among the seven? You have had them all.
  • And Jesus answered and said unto them: Ye err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God.
  • In the resurrection they will neither be free nor allowed to be free, but they will be like the angels of God in heaven.
  • But have ye not read of the resurrection of the dead, which is told you of GOD, saying: 32. I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? But God is not a God of the dead, but of the living.
  • And when the people heard these things, they were astonished at his doctrine.
  • And when the Pharisees heard that he had shut up the Sadducees, they gathered themselves together.
  • And one of them, a scribe, tempted him, saying:
  • Master, which is the noblest commandment in the law?
  • And JESUS said unto him, Thou shalt love GOD thy LORD with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
  • This is the noblest and greatest commandment.
  • And the other is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
  • In these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
  • Now when the Pharisees were together, JEsus asked them
  • And said, How think ye of Christ? Whose son is he? They said: David’s.
  • And he said unto them: How then doth David in spirit call him a LORD, saying: 44. The LORD hath said unto my LORD, Sit thou on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.
  • If therefore David call him a lord, how is he his son?
  • And no man was able to answer him a word, neither was it lawful for any man to ask him from that day forward.
    (Matthew)
    Chapter 23
Jesus warning against the scribes and Pharisees.
  • Then spake JEsus unto the people, and unto his disciples
  • And said, In Moses’ seat sit the scribes and Pharisees.
  • All things therefore whatsoever they say unto you, that ye ought to observe, observe, and do; but after their works do ye not. They say it, and do it not.
  • But they bind heavy and intolerable burdens, and lay them upon men’s necks; but they will not lift them with a finger.
  • And all their works do they that they may be seen of men. They make their slips wide, and the
    hems of their garments great.
  • they like to sit on top over the table and in the schools
  • And they delight to be saluted in the market, and to be called of men Rabbi.
  • But ye shall not be called Rabbi: for one is your Master, Christ: but ye are all brethren.
  • And call no man your father upon earth: for one is your Father which is in heaven.
  • And ye shall not be called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ.
  • The greatest among you shall be your servant.
  • For he that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that abaseth himself shall be exalted.
  • Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, which shut up the kingdom of heaven from men! Ye enter not in, neither let them that would enter in.
  • Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, that eat widows’ houses, and turn aside long prayers! Therefore ye shall receive the more condemnation.
  • Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, which go about by land and sea, to make a fellow Jew! And when he is made, ye make him a child of hell, twofold more than ye are.
  • Woe unto you, ye blind leaders, that say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing: but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is guilty.
  • Ye fools and blind men, which is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold?
  • Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing: but whosoever shall swear by the sacrifice that is above, he is guilty.
  • Ye fools and blind men, which is greater, the sacrifice, or the altar that sanctifieth the sacrifice?
  • He that sweareth by the altar sweareth by it, and by all that is above.
  • And whosoever shall swear by the temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth therein.
  • And whosoever shall swear by heaven shall swear by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon.
  • Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye tithe the mint, and the dill, and the caraway, and leave behind the most grievous things of the law, judgment, and mercy, and faith. This ought ye to do, and that ought ye not to do.
  • Ye blind leaders, which behold gnats, and swallow camels!
  • Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye keep the vessels and the vials clean outwardly, but inwardly they are full of spoil and filth.
  • Thou blind Pharisee, first cleanse the inward parts of the cup and dish, that the outward parts also may be clean.
  • Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which outwardly appear beautiful, but inwardly are full of dead men’s bones and all manner of filthiness.
  • So likewise ye; outwardly ye appear righteous before men, but inwardly ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.
  • Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, which build the sepulchres of the prophets, and adorn the graves of the righteous.
  • Saying, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them of the blood of the prophets.
  • Ye bear witness of yourselves, that ye are the children of them that slew the prophets.
  • Come, ye also, fulfill the measure of your fathers.
  • Ye serpents, ye vipers, how shall ye escape the damnation of hell?
  • Therefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and of them ye shall kill and crucify some, and some ye shall scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city,
  • That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias the son of Barachiah, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar.
  • Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation.
  • Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them that are sent unto thee, how often
would I have gathered thy children together, as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings; and ye would not!
  • Behold, your house shall be left unto you desolate.
  • For I say unto you: Ye shall not see me from henceforth, till ye say, Blessed be he that cometh in the name of the LORD.
    (Matthew)
    Chapter 24
Of the destruction of the city of Jerusalem and the end of the world.
  • And JEsus departed from the temple, and his disciples came unto him, to shew him the buildings of the temple.
  • And Jesus said unto them, See ye not all these things? Verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be broken.
  • And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, his disciples came unto him specially, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?
  • And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you.
  • For many shall come under my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.
  • Ye shall hear wars, and the noise of wars: watch, and be not dismayed. All these things must first come to pass; but the end is not yet.
  • For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against
