Luther Bible 1545 (English)
kingdom; and there shall be pestilences, and grievous times, and earthquakes in divers places.
  • there will be first of all the need.
  • Then shall they deliver you up into tribulation, and shall kill you. And ye shall be hated for my name’s sake of all nations.
  • Then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another.
  • And many false prophets shall arise, and shall deceive many.
  • And because iniquity shall abound, love shall wax cold in many.
  • But he that endureth to the end shall be saved.
  • And the gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations: and then shall the end come.
  • When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, which was spoken of by Daniel the prophet, that it shall stand in the holy place, let him that readeth take heed, 16. Then let him that is in the land of the Jews flee to the mountains; 17. And he that is on the housetop, let him not come down to take any thing out of his house; 18. And he that is in the field, let him not return to take up his garments.
  • But woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days!
  • But pray that your flight be not in the winter, or on the sabbath day, 21. For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the world began, neither ever shall be.
  • And if those days were not shortened, no man should be saved: but for the elect’s sake the days are shortened.
  • Then if any man shall say unto you, Behold, here is Christ, or there; believe it not.
  • For false Christs and false prophets shall arise, and shall shew great signs and wonders, to deceive (where it is possible) even the elect.
  • Behold, I told you before!
  • Therefore when they shall say unto you: Behold, he is in the wilderness; go not forth: behold, he is in the chamber; believe it not.
  • For as the lightning goeth forth from the rising, and shineth even unto the going down; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
  • But where there is a carcase, there the eagles gather together.
  • But soon after the tribulation of those days the sun and the moon shall be darkened, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken.
  • And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven. And then shall all kindreds of the
earth howl, and shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.
  • And he shall send his angels with a great trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.
  • Learn a parable of the fig tree. When its branch becomes sapient and produces leaves, you know that summer is near.
  • So also, when ye see all these things, know that it is at the door.
  • Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be done.
  • Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.
  • But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not even the angels which are in heaven, but my Father only.
  • But as it was in the days of Noah, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
  • For as they were in the days that were before the flood, they did eat, and they drank, and they did relieve themselves, until the day that Noah entered into the ark, 39. And they regarded it not, till the flood came, and took them all away: so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
  • Then shall two be in the field; one shall be accepted, and the other left.
  • Two shall grind at the mill; the one shall be accepted, and the other shall be left.
  • Therefore watch. For ye know not what hour your Lord shall come.
  • But this ye ought to know: If a householder knew the hour of the thief’s coming, he would keep watch and not let him break into his house.
  • Therefore be ye also ready: for the Son of man shall come in an hour when ye think not.
  • Which then is a faithful and prudent servant, whom his lord hath set over his servants, to give them meat in due season?
  • Blessed is the servant when his lord comes and finds him doing thus!
  • Verily I say unto you, He shall set him over all his goods.
  • But that wicked servant shall say in his heart, My lord is not yet come, 49. And he began to smite his fellowservants, and to eat and to drink with the drunken: 50. Then shall the lord of that servant come in the day of which he is not minded, and in the hour which he is not minded,
  • And shall break him down, and shall give him his reward with the hypocrites. There shall be his weeping and gnashing of teeth.
    (Matthew)
    Chapter 25
Of ten virgins, the familiar hundredweight, and the Last Judgment.
  • Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went out to meet the bridegroom.
  • But five of them were foolish, and five were wise.
  • The foolish took their lamps, but they took not oil with them.
  • But the prudent took oil in their vessels with their lamps.
  • And when the bridegroom departed, they were all drowsy, and fell asleep.
  • And at midnight there was a cry, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; come out to meet him.
  • Then all these virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps.
  • And the foolish said unto the prudent, Give us of your oil: for our lamps are gone out.
  • And the wise answered and said: Not so, lest there be a breach between us and you. But go ye to the merchants, and buy for yourselves.
  • And as they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage. And the door was shut.
  • And last of all the other virgins came and said: Lord, Lord, open to us!
  • And he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know not yours.
  • Watch therefore. For ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man shall come.
  • As a man going over the country called his servants, and put his goods in their hands.
  • And to one he gave five talents, and to another two, and to a third one, to every man according to his ability: and he departed quickly.
  • And he that had received five talents went and traded with the same, and gained other five talents.
  • Likewise also he that had received two talents gained also two others.
  • And he that had received one went and made a pit in the ground, and hid his lord’s money.
  • For a long time the lord of these servants came and kept account with them.
  • And he that had received five talents came near, and presented other five talents, and said, Lord, thou hast given me five talents: behold, I have gained therewith other five talents.
  • And his lord said unto him, O thou faithful and true servant, thou hast been faithful over a few things: I will set thee over many things. Enter thou into the joy of thy lord.
  • And he also that had received two talents came near, and said, Lord, thou hast given me two talents: behold, I have gained with them two others.
  • And his lord said unto him, O thou faithful and true servant, thou hast been faithful over a few things: I will set thee over many things. Enter thou into the joy of thy lord.
  • And he also that had received a talent came near, and said, Lord, I knew thee that thou art a hard man: thou reapest where thou hast not sown, and gatherest where thou hast not strawed.
  • And I was afraid, and went and hid thy talent in the earth. Behold, thou hast thine own.
  • But his master answered and said unto him, Thou mischievous and slothful servant! Did you know that I reap when I have not sown, and gather when I have not strewed?, 27. Then shalt thou have put my money to the moneychangers, and if I had come, I would have taken mine with usury.
  • Take therefore of him the talent, and give it to him that hath ten talents.
  • For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken even that which he hath.
  • And cast out the worthless servant into the outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
  • But when the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory.
  • And all nations shall be gathered together before him. And he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth the sheep from the goats.
  • And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, and the goats on his left.
  • Then shall the king say unto them that are on his right hand: Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.
  • For I was hungry, and ye fed me. I have been thirsty, and ye have given me drink. I have been a guest, and ye have lodged me.
  • I was naked, and ye clothed me. I have been sick, and ye have visited me. I have been a prisoner, and ye have come unto me.
  • Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee hungry, and fed thee?
or thirsty, and gave thee drink?
  • When saw we
