Luther Bible 1545 (English)
up the rest of the fragments, seven baskets.
And there were about four thousand of them that had eaten: and he sent them away].
And straightway he entered into a ship with his disciples, and came into the region of Dalmanuthah.
And the Pharisees came out, and began to question with him, and tempted him, and desired of him a sign from heaven.
And he groaned in his spirit, and said, Why seeketh this generation for signs? Verily I say unto you, There shall no sign be given unto this generation.
And he left them, and entered into the ship again, and passed over.
And they had forgotten to take bread with them, and had no more with them in the ship but one loaf.
And he commanded them, saying, Watch, and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the leaven of Herod.
And they considered from time to time, and said one to another, This is it, that we have no bread.
And when JEsus heard it, he saith unto them: Why do ye trouble yourselves that ye have not bread? Do ye not yet understand, and are not yet wise? Have ye yet a stiffnecked heart within you?
Have ye eyes, and see not; and have ye ears, and hear not, and think not, 19. When I brake five loaves among five thousand, how many baskets full of fragments did ye take up? They said: Twelve.
And when I had broken the seven among the four thousand, how many baskets of bread did ye take up? And they said, Seven.
And he said unto them: How then hear ye nothing?
And he came to Bethsaida. And they brought unto him a blind man, and besought him that he would touch him.
And he took the blind man by the hand, and brought him forth before the stain, and spit upon his eyes, and laid his hands upon him, and asked him if he saw anything.
And he looked up, and said: I see men walking as I see trees.
And afterward he put his hands again upon his eyes, and made him see again: and he was restored, and saw all things clearly.
And he sent him home, saying, Go not into the village, neither tell any man within.
And Jesus went out, and his disciples into the markets of the city Caesarea Philippi. And on the way he asked his disciples, saying unto them: Who do men say that I am?
They answered: They say that thou art John the Baptist; some say that thou art Elijah; some say that thou art one of the prophets.
And he said unto them: But ye, who say ye that I am? Then answered Peter, and said unto him, Thou art Christ.
And he charged them that they should say nothing of him.
And began to teach them: The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the
elders, and of the chief priests, and of the scribes, and be killed, and rise again after three days.
And he spake the word freely. And Peter took him, and began to resist him.
And he turned, and looked upon his disciples, and rebuked Peter, and said, Get thee behind me, thou Satan. For thou meanest not what is divine, but what is human.
And he called unto him the people with his disciples, and said unto them: If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel’s, the same shall save it.
What would it profit a man, if he should gain the whole world, and lose his soul?
Or what can man give that he may redeem his soul?
But whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.
Ch. 9, v. 1: And he said unto them: Verily I say unto you, There be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God come with power.

Chapter 9
History of Christ’s transfiguration and the moonstruck son. Doctrine of humility and vexation.
And after six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John, and led them up into a high mountain by themselves, and glorified himself before them.
And his garments became bright, and very white as the snow, so that no dyer on earth could make them so white.
And there appeared unto them Elijah with Moses, and they spake with JEsu.
And Peter answered and said unto JEsu, Rabbi, here is good: let us make thee three tabernacles, and Moses one, and Elias one.
But he knew not what he spake: for they were amazed.
And there came a cloud overshadowing them. And a voice came out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son; him shall ye hear.
And soon after they looked round about, and saw no man, save JEsum alone with them.
And when they were come down from the mountain, Jesus charged them that they should tell no man what they had seen, until the Son of man should rise from the dead.
And they kept the word, and asked one another, What is the rising from the dead?
And they asked him, saying, Do not the scribes say that Elias must come before them?
And he answered and said unto them: Elijah shall come first, and restore all things: and the Son of man shall suffer many things, and be despised, as it is written.
But I say unto you, That Elias is come, and they have done unto him as they would, according as it is written of him.
And, coming to his disciples, he saw much people about them, and scribes consulting with them.
And straightway, when all the people saw him, they were amazed, and ran and greeted him.
And he asked the scribes: What do ye inquire of them?
But one of the people answered and said, Master, I have brought unto thee my son, who hath a speechless spirit;
And when he catcheth him, he plucketh him, and foameth, and gnasheth with his teeth, and withereth. I spake unto thy disciples, that they should cast him out, and they could not.
And he answered him, and said, O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I suffer with you? Bring him hither unto me!
And they brought him hither unto him. And immediately when the spirit saw him, he rent him, and fell to the earth, and rolled, and foamed.
And he said unto his father, How long is it that this hath befallen him? And he said, From his infancy.
And oftentimes he hath cast him into fire and into water, to destroy him. But if thou canst,
have mercy on us, and help us.
And JESUS said unto him, If thou couldst believe! All things are possible to him that believeth.
And immediately the father of the child cried with tears, saying: I believe, O Lord; help my unbelief.
And when JE saw that the people were running, he rebuked the unclean spirit, and said unto him, Thou dumb and deaf spirit, I command thee that thou depart from him, and go not into him henceforth.
And he cried out, and rent him very sore, and went out. And he was as though he were dead: and many said, He is dead.
And JEsus took him by the hand, and lifted him up; and he arose.
And when he was come home, his disciples asked him specially, Why could we not cast him out?
And he said, This kind cannot go out except by prayer and fasting.
And they departed thence, and walked through Galilee: and he would not that any man should know it.
And he taught his disciples, and said unto them: The Son of man shall be delivered into the hands of men. And they shall kill him; and when he is slain, he shall rise again the third day.
But they heard not the word, and feared to ask him.
And he came to Capernaum. And when he was at home, he asked them: What did ye do together in the way?
But they held their peace: for they had dealt with one another in the way which was greatest.
And he sat down, and called unto the twelve, and said unto them, If any man will be first, he shall be last of all, and servant of all.
And he took a little child, and set him in the midst of them, and brought him near, and said unto them:
Whosoever shall receive one of these little children in my name receiveth me: and he that receiveth me receiveth not me, but him that sent me.
And John answered and said unto him, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name, which followed us not: and we forbade him therefore, that he should not follow us.
And Jesus said: Ye shall not forbid him. For there is no man that doeth a deed in my name, and may soon speak evil of me.
He that is not against us is for us.
But whosoever shall drink unto you a cup of water in my name, because ye are Christ’s, verily I say unto you, it shall not be vouchsafed unto him.
And whosoever shall offend one of these little ones that believe on me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were cast into the sea.
But if thy hand offend thee, cut it off. It is better for thee to enter into life as a cripple, than to have two hands, and go into hell, into everlasting fire,
For their
