Luther Bible 1545 (English)
that is he; take him, and lead him surely.
  • And when he was come, he came to him straightway, and said unto him, Rabbi, Rabbi; and kissed him.
  • And they laid their hands on him, and took him.
  • And one of them that stood by drew his sword, and smote the servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear.
  • And JEsus answered and said unto them: Ye are come out as unto a murderer with swords and with staves to take me.
  • I have been daily with you in the temple, teaching, and ye have not taken hold of me: but that the scripture might be fulfilled.
  • And the disciples all forsook him, and fled.
  • And there was a young man following him, clothed in linen on the bare skin: and the young men laid hold on him.
  • And he let go the canvas, and fled from them naked.
  • And they brought JEsum unto the high priest, where all the chief priests, and the elders, and the scribes, were gathered together.
  • And Peter followed him afar off, even into the palace of the high priest: and there he sat with the servants, warming himself by the light.
  • But the chief priests and all the council sought to testify against JEsum, that they might put him to death, and found nothing.
  • Many bare false witness against him, but their testimony did not agree.
  • And some arose, and bare false witness against him, and said: 58. We have heard that he said, I will break down the temple that is made with hands, and in three days will I build another that is not made with hands.
  • But their testimony did not yet agree.
  • And the high priest stood up among them, and asked JEsum, saying, Answerest thou nothing to the things which these witness against thee?
  • And he held his peace, and answered nothing. Then the high priest asked him again, and said unto him, Art thou the Christ, the Son of the most blessed?
  • And JEsus said: It is I. And ye shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming with the clouds of heaven.
  • And the high priest rent his skirt, and said, What need we any more witnesses?
  • Ye have heard them, and what think ye? And they all condemned him, that he was guilty of death.
  • Then began some to spit upon him, and to cover his face, and to smite him with their fists, and to say unto him, Prophesy unto us. And the servants smote him in the face.
  • And Peter was in the palace, and one of the maidservants of the high priest came.
  • And when she saw Peter warming himself, she looked upon him, and said, And thou also wast with JEsu of Nazareth.
  • But he denied it, saying: I know him not, neither know I what thou sayest. And he went out into the court: and the cock crowed.
  • And the maid saw him, and began again to say unto them that sat by: This is the one.
  • and he denied it again. And after a little while they that stood by said again unto Peter: Verily thou art one; for thou art a Galilaean, and thy language is like unto this.
  • And he began to curse himself, and to swear: I know not the man of whom ye say.
  • And the cock crowed the second time. Then Peter remembered the word which Jesus spake unto him, Before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice. And he began to weep.

    Chapter 15
Christ’s Passion before Pilate, Coronation, Crucifixion, Death and Burial 1. And straightway in the morning the chief priests held a council with the elders and scribes, and with all the council, and bound Jesus, and led him away, and delivered him to Pilate.
  • And Pilate asked him, Art thou a king of the Jews? And he answered and said unto him, Thou sayest it.
  • And the chief priests accused him severely.
  • And Pilate asked him again, saying, Answerest thou nothing? Behold, how hard they accuse thee!
  • But Jesus answered no more; so that Pilate also marvelled.
  • And he used to release unto them at the feast of the passover a prisoner, whom they desired.
  • And there was one called Barabbas, which was taken with the rebels, which had committed murder in the riot.
  • And the people went up, and besought him that he would do as he did.
  • And Pilate answered them: Will ye that I release unto you the king of the Jews?
  • For he knew that the chief priests had delivered him up out of envy.
  • But the chief priests provoked the people, that he would rather deliver Barabbas unto them.
  • And Pilate answered again, and said unto them: What will ye then that I should do to him whom ye accuse to be a king of the Jews?
  • And they cried again, Crucify him.
  • And Pilate said unto them: What evil hath he done? But they cried out much more, Crucify him.
  • But Pilate, thinking to do enough for the people, released Barabbas to them and delivered Jesus to be scourged and crucified.
  • And the soldiers brought him into the judgment house, and called the whole company together;
  • And they clothed him in purple, and wove for him a crown of thorns, and put it upon him; 18. And they began to salute him, Hail, king of the Jews.
  • And they smote him on the head with a reed, and spit upon him, and fell on their knees, and worshipped him.
  • And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of his purple, and put on him his own clothes, and led him out to crucify him.
  • And they compelled one that passed by, named Simon of Cyrene, which came from the field, (who was a father to Alexander and Rufus,) to bear him the cross.
  • And they brought him to the place called Golgotha, which is interpreted, The place of the skull.
  • And they gave him myrrh in wine to drink: and he took it not.
  • And when they had crucified him, they parted his garments, and cast lots to see which should come first.
  • And it was about the third hour that they crucified him.
  • And it was written above concerning him, what they blamed him for, saying, A king of the Jews.
  • And they crucified with him two murderers, one on his right hand, and one on his left.
  • And the scripture was fulfilled, which saith, He is numbered with the transgressors.
  • And they that passed by blasphemed him, and shook their heads, saying, Fie on thee, how thou breakest down the temple, and buildest it in three days.
  • Help thyself therefore, and come down from the cross.
  • And likewise the chief priests mocked him among themselves, and the scribes, saying: He hath helped others, and cannot help himself.
  • If he be Christ, and King in Israel, let him now come down from the cross, that we may see and believe. And they also that were crucified with him reviled him.
  • And after the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour.
  • And about the ninth hour JEsus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama asabthani? that is interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?
  • And some of them that stood by, when they heard it, said, Behold, he calleth Elias.
  • And one ran, and filled a sponge with vinegar, and put it upon a reed, and watered it, and said, Hold, let me see if Elijah will come and take it down.
  • But JEsus cried aloud, and passed away.
  • And the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom.
  • And the centurion that stood by, and saw him die with such a cry, said he, Verily this man was the Son of God.
  • And there were also women beholding these things afar off; among whom was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of little James, and of Joses, and Salome, 41. Who also followed him when he was in Galilee, and ministered, and many others that went up with him to Jerusalem.
  • And in the evening, because it was the preparation day, which is the day before the sabbath, 43. Joseph of Arimathea, an honourable counsellor, who also waited for the kingdom of God, came and dared to go in to Pilate, and asked for the body of JEsu.
  • And Pilate marvelled that he was already dead, and called the centurion, and asked him if he were long dead.
  • And when he knew it of the centurion, he gave Joseph the body.
  • And he bought a linen, and took him down, and wrapped him in the linen, and laid him in a sepulchre that was hewn out of a rock, and rolled a stone at the door of the sepulchre.
  • But Mary Magdalene and Mary Joses watched where he was laid.

    Chapter 16
    Of Christ’s resurrection and ascension.
  • And when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary of James, and Salome, bought spices, that they might come and anoint him.
  • And they came unto the sepulchre on a sabbath day very early, when the sun was risen.
  • And they said one to another, Who shall roll us the stone from the door of the sepulchre?
  • And they looked there, and perceived that the stone was rolled away; for it was very great.
  • And they entered into the sepulchre, and saw a young man sitting on the right hand, clothed in a long white garment. And they were amazed.
  • And he said unto them: Be not dismayed. Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified: he is risen, and is not here. Behold the place where they laid him.
  • But go and tell his disciples and Peter, that he will go before you into Galilee; and there ye shall see him, as he hath said unto you.
  • And they came out quickly, and fled from the sepulchre: for
