  • And to the oath which he sware unto Abraham our father to give us, 74. That we, being delivered out of the hand of our enemies, might serve him without fear all our days.
  • In holiness and righteousness, which is pleasing in his sight.
  • and thou, O child, shalt be called a prophet of the Most High: thou shalt go before the LORD, to prepare his way.
  • And give knowledge of salvation unto his people, which is in the remission of their sins, 78. through the tender mercy of our God, by which the rising from on high has visited us, 79. That he may appear to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, and direct our feet into the way of peace.
  • And the young child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in the wilderness, until he should stand forth before the people of Israel].

    Chapter 2
    Christ’s birth, circumcision and presentation, parley in the temple.
  • Now it came to pass in those days, that there went out a commandment from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be esteemed.
  • And this estimation was the first of all, and was made in the time that Cyrenius was governor in Syria.
  • And every man went to be appraised, every man to his own city.
  • Then Joseph also arose out of Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, into the land of Judah, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; because he was of the house and family of David.
  • That he might be esteemed with Mary his familiar wife, which was with child.
  • And when they were there, the time came that she should be delivered.
  • And she bare her first son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger: for they had no other room in the inn.
  • And there were shepherds in the same region in the field by the hurdles, keeping watch over their flock by night.
  • And, behold, the angel of the LORD came unto them, and the glory of the LORD shone round about them, and they were sore afraid.
    10: And the angel said unto them: Fear not! Behold, I proclaim great joy to you, which shall be to all the people;
  • For unto you is born this day a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord, in the city of David.
  • And this have for a sign: You will find the child wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger.
  • And straightway there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising GOD,
    and saying:
  • Glory to God in the highest, and peace on earth, and goodwill toward men.
  • And when the angels were departed from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us go now unto Bethlehem, and see the things which are come to pass, which the LORD hath made known unto us.
  • And they came in haste, and found both Mary and Joseph, and the young child lying in the manger.
  • And when they had seen it, they spread abroad the word which was spoken unto them of this child.
  • And all they that heard it marvelled at the words which the shepherds had spoken unto them.
  • But Mary kept all these words, and moved them in her heart.
  • And the shepherds returned again, praising and glorifying GOD for all that they had heard and seen, as it was said unto them].
  • And when eight days were expired for circumcising the child, his name was called Jesus, which was named of the angel before he was conceived in the womb].
  • And when the days of their purification came according to the law. And when the days of Moses’ purification were come, they brought him to Jerusalem, to present him unto the LORD.
  • For as it is written in the law of the LORD, Every male that first breaketh the mother shall be called holy unto the LORD,
  • And that they should offer the sacrifice, according as it is written in the law of the LORD, a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.
  • And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was devout, and feared God, and waited for the consolation of Israel; and the Holy Ghost was in him.
  • And an answer was given him of the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, because he had seen the Christ of the Lord before.
  • And came into the temple by inspiration of the Spirit. And when the parents had brought the child Jesus into the temple, to do for him according to the law, 28. And he took him upon his anne, and praised GOD, and said:
  • Now therefore, O LORD, let thy servant depart in peace, as thou hast said; 30. For mine eyes have seen thy Saviour,
  • Which thou hast prepared before all nations,
  • A light to enlighten the heathen, and for the praise of thy people Israel.
  • And his father and his mother marvelled at those things which were spoken of him.
  • And Simeon blessed them, and said unto Mary his mother, Behold, this man is set for a fall and a rising of many in Israel, and for a sign which shall be contradicted.
  • And a sword shall pierce through thy soul, that the thoughts of many hearts may be made manifest.
  • And there was a prophetess, Hannah, the daughter of Phanuel, of the family of Asher, which was well bedded, and had lived seven years with her husband after her virginity.
  • And there was a widow of fourscore and four years old, which never came out of the temple, but served God with fasting and prayer day and night:
  • The same came also at that hour, and glorified the LORD, and spake of him unto all them that waited for salvation at Jerusalem.
  • And when they had finished all things according to the law of the LORD, they returned into Galilee unto their city Nazareth.
  • But the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, full of wisdom; and the grace of God was with him.
  • And his parents went every year to Jerusalem for the feast of the passover.
  • And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem according to the custom of the feast.
  • And when the days were fulfilled, and they returned home, the child JEsus abode at
    Jerusalem: and his parents knew it not.
  • And thinking that he was among the companions, they came a day’s journey, and sought him among their friends and acquaintances.
  • And when they found him not, they went again to Jerusalem, seeking him.
  • And it came to pass, that, after three days, they found him sitting in the temple in the midst of the teachers, listening unto them, and asking them.
  • And all that heard him marvelled at his understanding and his answer.
  • And when they saw him, they were amazed. And his mother said unto him: My son, why hast thou done this unto us? Behold, your father and I have sought you with pain.
  • And he said unto them: What is it that ye have sought me? Know ye not that I must be in that which is my Father’s?
  • And they understood not the word which he spake unto them.
  • And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them. And his mother kept all these words in her heart.
  • And JEsus increased in wisdom, age, and grace with GOD and men].

    Chapter 3
    John’s sermon on repentance and testimony of Christ. Baptism and the Liaison of the Nativity.
  • In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius the emperor, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, and Herod tetrarch of Galilee, and Philip his brother tetrarch of Ituraea, and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene,
  • When Annas and Caiaphas were high priests, the commandment of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness.
  • And he came into all the region round about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.
  • As it is written in the book of the sayings of Isaiah the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the LORD, and make his paths straight.
  • Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be humbled; and that which is crooked shall be made right, and that which is rough shall be made crooked.
  • And all flesh shall see the Saviour of God.
  • And he said unto the people that went out to be baptized of him, Ye sons of vipers, who hath shewed you that ye shall escape the wrath to come?
  • Take heed, do righteous fruits of repentance, and presume not to say, We have Abraham for a father. For I say unto you, God is able to raise up children unto Abraham out of these stones.
  • The axe is laid unto the root of the trees: every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
  • And the people asked him, saying, What shall we do?
  • And he answered and said unto them: He that hath two coats, let him give to him that hath none; and he that hath meat, let him do likewise.
  • And the publicans came also to be baptized, and said unto him, Master, what shall we do?
  • And he said unto them: Ask no more than is set.
  • Then asked they him also the men of war, saying: What then shall we do? And he said unto them: Do neither violence nor injustice to any man, and be content with your garments.
