he hath found it, he layeth it upon his shoulder with joy.
  • And when he is come home, he calleth his friends and neighbours, and saith unto them: Rejoice with me: for I have found my sheep which was lost.
  • I say unto you: So also there will be joy in heaven over one sinner who repents, over ninety-nine righteous who have no need of repentance.
  • Or what woman hath ten pence, if she lose one, that lighteth not a light, and turneth the house, and searcheth diligently, until she find him?
  • And when she hath found it, she calleth her friends and her neighbours, and saith, Rejoice with me: for I have found my penny, which I had lost.
  • So also, I say unto you, there shall be joy in the sight of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth].
  • And he said, A man had two sons.
  • And the youngest of them said unto his father, Give me, father, that part of the goods which is mine. And he divided the goods unto them.
  • And it was not long after that the youngest son gathered all things together. And not long after, the youngest son gathered up all his goods, and went far away into the country; and there he destroyed his goods with plunder.
  • And when he had eaten up all that was his, there was a great famine throughout all that land, and he began to be in want.
  • And he went and hanged himself on a citizen of the same country, and he sent him into his field to feed the swine.
  • And he desired to fill his belly with grains, which the swine did eat: and no man gave them him.
  • And he smote himself, and said, How many hired servants hath my father, which have bread in abundance, and I perish with hunger!
  • I will arise, and go unto my father, and say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee.
  • And I am no more worthy to be called thy son: make me one of thy hired servants.
  • And he arose, and came to his father. And when he was yet afar off, his father saw him, and lamented him, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.
  • And the son said unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee; I am no more worthy to be called thy son.
  • But the father said unto his servants: Bring forth the best robe, and put it upon him; and put a ring of fingers upon his hand, and shoes upon his feet;
  • And bring a fatted calf, and slay it: let us eat, and be merry.
  • For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And began to be glad.
  • But the eldest son was in the field, and when he was come nigh to the house, he heard the singing and the round dance.
  • And called unto him one of the. Servants one and asked what that was.
  • And he said unto him, Thy brother is come, and thy father hath slain a fatted calf, that he may recover him.
  • And he was wroth, and would not go in. Then his father went out, and besought him.
  • And he answered and said unto his father, Behold, so many years have I served thee, and have never transgressed thy commandment, neither hast thou ever given me a goat, that I might rejoice with my friends.
  • But now that this thy son is come, which hath devoured his substance with harlots, thou hast slain him a fatted calf.
  • And he said unto him, My son, thou art always with me, and all that is mine is thine.
  • And thou shalt be glad and of good cheer: for this thy brother was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.

    Chapter 16
    Abuse of Wealth.
  • And he said also unto his disciples, There was a certain rich man, which had a steward; and he was reproached before him, as if he had destroyed his goods.
  • And he demanded of him, and said unto him:
    How can I hear this from thee? Give account of thy stewardship: for thou canst not henceforth be a steward.
  • the steward spoke within himself: What shall I do? My lord taketh the office from me: I dig not, I am ashamed to beg.
  • I know well what I will do, when I am now set apart from the ministry; that they may take me into their houses.
  • And he called unto him all his lord’s debtors, and said unto the first, How much owest thou my lord?
  • And he said, An hundred tons of oil. And he said unto him, Take thy letter, and sit down, and write fifty.
  • And afterward he said unto the other: But thou, how much owest thou? And he said, An hundred measures of wheat. And he said unto him, Take thy letter, and write eighty.
  • And the LORD praised the unjust steward, because he had done wisely. For the children of this world are wiser than the children of light in their generation.
  • And I say also unto you, Make ye friends with unrighteous Mammon, that, when ye now offer, they may receive you into the everlasting tabernacles].
  • He that is faithful in the least is faithful also in the greatest: and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in the greatest.
  • If ye then be not faithful in unrighteous mammon, who will trust you in that which is true?
  • And if ye be not faithful in the stranger, who will give you that which is yours?
  • No manservant can serve two masters: either he will hate one, and love another; or else he will cleave to one, and despise another. Ye cannot serve God with mammon.
  • And the Pharisees also heard all these things; and they were covetous, and mocked him.
  • And he said unto them: Ye are they which justify yourselves before men: but God knoweth your hearts. For that which is high among men is abomination in the sight of God.
  • The law and the prophets prophesy unto John: and from that time forth the kingdom of God is preached by the gospel, and every man presseth into it by force.
  • But it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away, than for one tittle to fall from the law.
  • Whosoever shall put away his wife, and marry another, committeth adultery: and whosoever shall put away his wife from her husband committeth adultery.
  • Now there was a certain rich man, which clothed himself in purple and fine linen, and lived all his days gloriously and joyfully.
  • And there was a poor man named Lazarus, which lay at his door full of sores.
  • And he desired to be satisfied with the crumbs that fell from the rich man’s table. But the dogs came and licked his sores.
  • And it came to pass, that the poor man died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom. And the rich man died also, and was buried.
  • And when he was in hell and in torment, he lifted up his eyes, and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom,
  • Cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the uttermost part of his finger in the water, and cool my tongue: for I suffer torment in this flame.
  • And Abraham said, Remember, son, that thou hast received thy good things in thy life, and Lazarus hath received evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.
  • And over all this there is a great gulf fixed between us and you: so that they which would go down from hence unto you cannot, neither can they pass over from thence unto us.
  • And he said, I pray thee, O father, that thou wouldest send him into my father’s house; 28. For I have yet five brethren, that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.
  • And Abraham said unto him, They have Moses and the prophets: let them hear the same.
  • And he said, Nay, father Abraham; but if one of the dead would go unto them, they would repent.
  • And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they believe, if any man rise from the dead].

    Chapter 17
    Of vexation, propitiation, faith and works, ten lepers, and the future of the kingdom of God.
  • And he said unto his disciples, It is impossible that trouble should not come: but woe unto him by whom it cometh!
  • It were more profitable for him that a millstone should be hanged about his neck, and that he should be cast into the sea, than that he should offend these little ones.
  • Beware! If thy brother sin against thee, punish him; and if he amend, forgive him.
  • And if he sin against thee seven times in a day, and come again unto thee seven times in a day, and say, I repent; thou shalt forgive him.
  • And the apostles said unto the Lord, Strengthen us in the faith.
  • And the LORD said, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, and say unto this mulberry tree, Pluck thee up, and put thee into the sea, it will be obedient unto you.
  • What man is there of you that hath a servant to plow for him, or to feed his cattle, when he cometh home from the field, to say unto him, Go quickly, and sit down to meat?
  • Is it not so, that he saith unto him: Make ready that I may eat supper; apron thyself, and serve me, until I eat and drink: afterward shalt thou also eat and drink?
