him into the same place.
And when he was come thither, he said unto them: Pray, that ye enter not into temptation.
And he tore himself from them at the casting of a stone, and kneeled down, praying 42. And said, Father, if thou wilt, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.
And there appeared unto him an angel from heaven, strengthening him.
And it came to pass, that he wrestled with death, and prayed more earnestly. And his sweat was as drops of blood falling to the ground.
came to his disciples and found them asleep with sadness.
And said unto them: Why sleep ye? Arise, and pray, that ye enter not into temptation.
And while he yet spake, behold, the multitude, and one of the twelve, called Judas, went before them, and drew nigh to JEsu to kiss him.
And JESUS said unto him, Judas, betrayest thou the Son of man with a kiss?
And when they that were about him saw what was to come, they said unto him, Lord, shall we smite with the sword?
And one of them smote the high priest’s servant, and cut off his right ear.
And JEsus answered and said, Let them be made so far off. And he touched his ear, and healed him.
And JEsus said unto the chief priests, and to the captains of the temple, and to the elders that were come upon him: Ye went out, as unto a murderer, with swords and with staves.
I have been daily with you in the temple, and ye have laid no hand upon me: but this is your hour, and the power of darkness.
And they took him, and led him, and brought him into the high priest’s house. And Peter followed afar off.
Then they kindled a fire in the midst of the palace, and sat down together: and Peter sat down among them.
And when a certain maid saw him sitting by the light, she looked straight upon him, and said unto him, This man also was with him.
And he denied him, saying, Woman, I know him not.
And about a little while another saw him, and said, Thou also art one. And Peter said, Man, I am not he.
And about an hour, another confirmed it, saying, Verily this man also was with him; for he is a Galilaean.
And Peter said, Man, I know not what thou sayest. And straightway, while he yet spake, the cock crowed.
And the LORD turned, and looked upon Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, which he spake unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice.
And Peter went out, weeping bitterly.
But the men that kept JEsum mocked him, and smote him,
And they covered him, and smote him in the face, and asked him, saying: Prophesy, who is it that smote thee?
And many other blasphemies said they against him.
And when it was day, the elders of the people, the chief priests, and the scribes, gathered themselves together, and brought him up before their council.
And said: Art thou Christ? Tell us. And he said unto them, If I tell you, ye will not believe; 68. But if I ask, ye answer not, yet let me not go.
Therefore from henceforth shall the Son of man sit at the right hand of the power of God.
And they all said, Art thou then the Son of God? And he said unto them: Ye say so, for I am he.
And they said: What need we any further testimony? We have heard it ourselves out of his mouth.

Chapter 23
Christ’s suffering before Pilate, his crucifixion, death, and Funeral.
And the whole company arose, and brought him before Pilate.
And began to accuse him, saying: This one we find turning away the people, and forbidding to give the bosom to Caesar, saying that he is Christ a king.
And Pilate asked him, saying, Art thou king of the Jews? And he answered him, and said, Thou sayest it.
Pilate said unto the chief priests and to the people, I find no cause in this man.
And they stopped, and said: He hath stirred up the people by teaching to and fro throughout all the land of Judaea, beginning at Galilee even unto this place.
And when Pilate heard Galilee, he asked if he were of Galilee, 7. And when he knew that he was under Herod’s authority, he sent him to Herod, which in those days was also at Jerusalem.
And when Herod saw JEsum, he was very glad; for he would gladly have seen him long since: for he had heard much of him, and hoped to see a sign from him.
And he asked him many things; but he answered him nothing.
But the chief priests and scribes tarried, and accused him severely.
But Herod with his court despised and mocked him, and put white raiment upon him, and sent him again to Pilate.
And that day Pilate and Herod became friends together: for before they were enemies one to another.
And Pilate called together the chief priests, and the rulers, and the people.
And said unto them: Ye have brought this man unto me, as one that turneth away the people.
And, behold, I have questioned him before you, and find none in the man of the things whereof ye accuse him.
Neither did Herod: for I sent you unto him, and, behold, nothing was brought upon him worthy of death.
Therefore will I chasten him, and let him go.
For he had to release unto them one according to the custom of the feast.
And the whole multitude cried out, saying, Away with this man, and deliver us Barabbas.
Who was cast into prison for a riot that was committed in the city, and for murder.
And Pilate called unto them again, and would have let JEsum go.
And they cried out, saying: Crucify, crucify him!
And he said unto them the third time: What evil hath this man done? I find no cause of death in him: therefore will I chasten him, and let him go.
And they lay before him with a great cry, demanding that he should be crucified. And the cry of them and of the chief priests increased.
And Pilate judged that their request was granted,
And let him go that was cast into prison for sedition and murder, whom they besought: but he delivered JEsum to their will.
And as they led him away, they took hold of one, Simon of Cyrene, which came out of the field, and laid the cross upon him, that he might bear it after Jesus.
And there followed him a great company of people and women, mourning and weeping over him.
And JEsus turned unto them, and said: Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me, but weep for yourselves, and for your children.
For, behold, the time cometh, in the which it shall be said: Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that have not borne, and the breasts that have not suckled.
Then shall they begin to say unto the mountains, Fall on us; and unto the hills, Cover us: Cover us!
For this is done in the green wood, what shall be done in the dry?
And there were brought also two other malefactors, that they might be put away with him.
And when they were come to the place which is called the place of the skull, there they
crucified him, and the transgressors with him, one on the right hand, and one on the left.
And Jesus said, Father, forgive them: for they know not what they do. And they parted his garments, and cast lots for them.
And the people stood and watched. And the rulers with them mocked him, saying: He hath helped others, let him help himself: for he is a Christian, the elect of God.
And the soldiers also mocked him, and came to him, and brought him vinegar.
And they said: If thou be king of the Jews, save thyself.
There was also written above it the superscription in Greek and Latin and Ebrew letters: This is the king of the Jews.
But the malefactor of one of them that were hanged blasphemed him, saying, If thou be Christ, save thyself, and us.
And the other answered and rebuked him, and said, And thou also art not afraid of God, who art in like condemnation?
And we are just in this: for we receive the worth of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing unadvisedly.
And said unto JEsu, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom.
And JESUS said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.
And it was about the sixth hour. And there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour.
And the sun departed out of his light, and the veil of the temple was rent in twain.
And JEsus cried with a loud voice, saying, Father, I commend my spirit into thy hands. And when he had said this, he passed away.
And when the centurion saw what was done, he praised God, and said, Verily this man hath been a righteous man.
And all the people that were present, when they saw what was done, smote their breasts, and turned again.
And all his kinsmen stood afar off, and the women that followed him out of Galilee, and saw all these things.
And, behold, a man named Joseph, an alderman, was a good and devout man; 51. Who had not consented to their counsel and trade; who was of Arimathea, the city of the Jews, who also waited for the kingdom of God:
Who went to Pilate, and asked for the body of JEsu.
And he took him down, and wrapped him in linen, and laid him in a hewn grave, wherein no man had ever lain.
And it was the preparation day, and the sabbath
