Luther Bible 1545 (English)
same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining upon him, the same is he that baptizeth with the Holy Ghost.
  • And I saw, and bare witness that this is the Son of God.
  • And the next day John stood again with two of his disciples.
  • And when he saw JEsum walking, he said, Behold, this is the Lamb of God!
  • And two of his disciples heard him speak, and followed JEsu?
  • And JEsus turned, and saw them following, and saith unto them: What seek ye? And they said unto him, Rabbi (that is interpreted, Master), where art thou to the inn?
  • And he said unto them: Come and see. And they came and saw it, and abode with him that day. And it was about the tenth hour.
  • One of the two that heard of John, and followed JEsu, was Andrew the brother of Simon Peter.
  • And he found his brother Simon first, and said unto him, We have found the Messiah, which is interpreted, The Anointed.
  • And brought him unto JEsu. And when JEsus saw him, he said, Thou art Simon the son of Jonas: thou shalt be called Cephas.
  • And the next day Jesus was going again into Galilee, and finds Philip, and says unto him, Follow me.
  • And Philip was of Bethsaida, of the city of Andrew and Peter.
  • Philip finding Nathanael saith unto him, We have found him of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, JEsum the son of Joseph, of Nazareth.
  • And Nathanael said unto him, What good thing can come out of Nazareth? Philip saith unto him, Come and see.
  • Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and saith of him, Behold a righteous Israelite, in whom is no deceit.
  • Nathanael saith unto him, How knowest thou me? Jesus answered and said unto him, Before Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree, I saw thee.
  • And Nathanael answered and said unto him, Rabbi, thou art the son of God, thou art the king of Israel.
  • And JEsus answered and said unto him, Thou hast believed, because I said unto thee, I saw thee under the fig tree: thou shalt see greater things than these.
  • And saith unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, From henceforth ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.
    (John)
    Chapter 2
Of the wedding at Cana and the cleansing of the temple.
    )
  • And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of JEsu was there.
  • And JEsus and his disciples were also bidden to the marriage.
  • And when there was no wine, the mother of JEsu saith unto him, They have no wine.
  • Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? My hour is not yet come.
  • His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.
  • And there were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the Jews’ cleansing, and two or three measures went into each.
  • Jesus saith unto them: Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them to the top.
  • And he saith unto them, Pour out now, and bring it unto the master of the feast. And they brought it.
  • And when the master of the feast had tasted the wine that was water, and knew not whence it came (but the servants knew, who had drawn the water), the master of the feast called the bridegroom, saying
  • And saith unto him, Every man giveth good wine at the first, and when they are drunken, then the less: thou hast kept the good wine until now.
  • This is the first sign that JEsus did, which was in Cana of Galilee, manifesting his glory. And his disciples believed on him].
  • And afterward he went down to Capernaum, he, and his mother, and his brethren, and his disciples, and abode not long there.
  • And the Jews’ feast was at hand. And JEsus went up to Jerusalem 14. And found them sitting in the temple hawking oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers.
  • And he made a scourge of cords, and drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen, and spilled the money of the changers, and overturned the tables.
  • And he said unto them that sold the doves, Take this hence, and make not my father’s house a house of sale.
  • And his disciples remembered that it is written, Zeal for thine house hath eaten me up.
  • And the Jews answered and said unto him, What sign showest thou unto us, that thou mayest do this thing?
  • And JEsus answered and said unto them: Break down this temple, and the third day I will raise it up.
  • And the Jews said, This temple was built in forty and six years, and thou wilt build it in three days?
  • And he spake of the temple of his body.
  • And when he was risen from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had spoken these things, and believed the scripture, and the words which Jesus spake.
  • And when he was in Jerusalem at the feast of the passover, many believed on his name, because they saw the signs which he did.
  • But JEsus trusted not in them: for he knew them all.
  • And needed not that any should bear witness of man: for he knew well what was in man.
    (John)
    Chapter 3
Conversation of Christ with Nicodemus about the way to eternal life. John testifies of Christ.
  • Now there was a man among the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a chief of the Jews.
  • Who came to JEsu by night, and said unto him, Master, we know that thou art a teacher come
from GOD: for no man can do the signs which thou doest, except GOD be with him.
  • And JEsus answered and said unto him: Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
  • Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? Can he also again go into his mother’s womb, and be born?
  • Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
  • That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
  • Marvel not that I said unto thee: Ye must be born again.
  • The wind bloweth whithersoever it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof; but knowest not whence it cometh, nor whither it goeth. So is every one that is born of the Spirit.
  • Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be?
  • JEsus answered and said unto him: Are you a master in Israel and don’t know it?
  • Verily, verily, I say unto thee, we speak that which we know, and testify that which we have seen; and ye receive not our testimony.
  • If I tell you about earthly things, how would you believe if I told you about heavenly things?
  • And no man goeth up to heaven, but he that descended from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.
  • And as Moses lifted up a serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of man be lifted up, 15. That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life].
  • God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
  • For God sent not his Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on him
  • Is not judged; but he that believeth not is already judged, because he believeth not on the name of the only begotten Son of God.
  • Now this is the judgment, that the light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light; because their works were evil.
  • He that doeth evil hateth the light, and cometh not to the light, lest his works should be punished.
  • But he that doeth the truth cometh to the light, that his works may be made manifest: for they are done in God].
  • After these things came JEsus and his disciples into the land of Judaea, and had there his being with them, baptizing.
  • And John also baptized at Enon, which is nigh unto Salim: for there was much water there.
And they came thither, and were baptized.
  • For John was not yet laid in prison.
  • Then a question arose among the disciples of John, and among the Jews, concerning the cleansing.
  • And they came to John, and said unto him, Master, he that was with thee beyond Jordan, of whom thou testifiedst, behold, he baptizeth, and every man cometh to him.
  • John answered and said, A man can take nothing, except it be given him from heaven.
  • Ye yourselves are my witnesses, that I said I was not Christ, but sent before him.
  • He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the bridegroom’s friend standeth and hearkeneth unto him, and rejoiceth greatly at the bridegroom’s voice. My joy is now fulfilled.
  • He must grow, but I must decrease.
  • He that cometh from above is above all. He that is of the earth is of the earth, and speaketh of the earth: he that cometh from heaven is above all
32.. And he beareth witness of those things which he hath seen and heard; and his testimony receiveth no man.
  • But he that receiveth it sealeth it, that GOD is true.
  • For whomsoever God hath sent, he speaketh the word of God; for God does not give the Spirit according to measure.
  • The Father loves the Son and has given all things into his hand.
  • He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: he that believeth not the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abideth on him.
