Luther Bible 1545 (English)
ye that would be under the law: Have ye not heard the law?
  • For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, the one by the maid, and the other by the free woman.
  • But he that was of the bondwoman was born according to the flesh: but he that was of the free woman was born through the promise.
  • The words signify something. For these are the two testaments, one from mount Sinai, which is born to bondage, which is Hagar.
  • For Hagar’s name is Mount Sinai in Arabia, and it reacheth unto Jerusalem, which is at this time, and is servant with her children.
  • But the Jerusalem which is above is the free, the mother of us all.
  • For it is written, Rejoice, thou barren that bearest not, and break forth and call, thou that conceivest not. For the lonely woman hath many more children than she that hath a husband.
  • But we, brethren, are Isaac’s children according to the promise.
  • But as in those days he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, so it is now also.
  • But what saith the scripture? Cast out the maid with her son. For the son of the maid shall not inherit with the son of the free woman.
  • So then, brethren, we are not the children of the handmaid, but of the free].
    (Galatians)
    Chapter 5
Exhortation to the right use of Christian liberty and to good works.
  • Stand ye therefore in liberty, that Christ may set us free; and be not entangled again in the bondage of the yoke.
  • Behold, I Paul say unto you: If ye be circumcised, Christ is no profit to you.
  • But again I testify unto every one that is circumcised, that he is yet under obligation to do the
    whole law.
  • Ye have lost Christ, who would be justified by the law, and have fallen from grace.
  • But we wait in the Spirit by the faith of righteousness, which must be hoped for.
  • For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor foreskin is of any value, but faith working through love.
  • Ye ran fine Who hath kept you from obeying the truth?
  • Such persuasion is not of him that called you.
  • a little sourdough acidifies the whole dough.
  • I promise you in the LORD, ye shall not be otherwise minded. But he that deceiveth you shall bear his judgment, whosoever he be.
  • But I, brethren, if I preach circumcision, why suffer I persecution? Then the persecution of the cross would have ceased.
  • Would to God that they also were cut off who disturb you!
  • But ye, brethren, are called to liberty; but see that ye by liberty give no place to the flesh, but by charity serve one another.
  • For all the laws are fulfilled in one word, saying: Love thy neighbor as thyself.
  • But if ye bite and devour one another, see that ye be not consumed one of another.
(Epistle on the fourteenth Sunday after Trinity.)
  • But I say, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not carry out the lusts of the flesh.
  • For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh. These are contrary to one another, because ye do not do the things that ye would.
  • But if the Spirit rule you, ye are not under the law.
  • But the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these: Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, fornication,
  • idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, envy, wrath, strife, discord, factions, hatred, murder, 21. Drinking, devouring, and such like: of which I told you before, and say before, that they which do these things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
  • And the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness, chastity.
  • Against such the law is not.
  • But they that are Christ’s crucify their flesh with their lusts and desires].
    (Galatians)
    Chapter 6
    To practice gentleness and goodness.
(Epistle on the fifteenth Sunday after Trinity.)
  • If we walk in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit, provoking one another to indignation and hatred.
Chapt. 6, v. 1. Brethren, if a man be overtaken in any fault, restore him with a gentle spirit, ye that are spiritual. And look to thyself, lest thou also be tempted.
  • Bear ye one another’s burdens, and ye shall fulfil the law of Christ.
  • But if any man think himself to be anything, when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself.
  • But let every man prove his own work, and then shall he glory in himself, and not in another.
  • For every man shall bear his own burden.
  • But he that is instructed in the word, let him impart all good things unto him that instructeth him.
  • Be not deceived: God is not mocked. For whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.
  • He that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption: but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life eternal.
  • But let us do good, and not be weary: for in his time we shall also reap without ceasing.
  • Now therefore, as we have time, let us do good to every man, but most of all to the companions of faith].
  • Behold, with how many words have I written unto you with mine own hand!
  • They that would make themselves acceptable after the flesh compel you to be circumcised,
only that they be not persecuted with the cross of Christ.
  • For even they themselves which are circumcised keep not the law, but desire that ye should be circumcised, that they may glory in your flesh.
  • But let it be far from me to boast only of the cross of our Lord JESUS Christ, by whom the world is crucified to me, and I to the world.
  • For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor foreskin signifies anything, but a new creature.
  • And how many shall walk according to this rule, upon them be peace and mercy, and upon the Israel of God!
  • Henceforth trouble me no more: for I bear in my body the marks of the LORD JEsu.
  • The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brethren. Amen.

The letter of Paul to the Ephesians ^
    Chapter 1
Thanksgiving for the spiritual benefits of God. Prayer for the increase of faith.
  • Paul, an apostle of JEsu Christ by the will of GOD: To the saints at Ephesus and believers in Christ JEsu.
  • Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
    (Epistle on St. Thomas’ Day.)
  • Blessed be God and the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly things through Christ;
  • Forasmuch then as he hath chosen us through him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love;
  • And hath ordained us to filial adoption unto himself by JESUS Christ, according to the good pleasure of his will,
  • To the praise of his glorious grace, by which he hath made us acceptable in the Beloved, 7. In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace,
  • Which is abundantly given unto us in all wisdom and prudence.
  • And hath made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure, and hath brought it forth by him,
  • That it might be preached, when the time was fulfilled, that all things might be gathered together in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are also on earth, through him, 11. By whom also we are come to the inheritance, which were ordained beforehand according to the purpose of him that worketh all things after the counsel of his will, 12. That we may be something to the praise of his glory, who first hope in Christ; 13. By whom also ye have heard the word of truth, which is the gospel of your salvation: by whom also, when ye believed, ye were sealed with the Holy Ghost of promise, 14. Which is the pledge of our inheritance unto our redemption, that we should be his own unto the praise of his glory.
  • Wherefore I also, after I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus, and of your love to all the saints,
  • I will not cease to give thanks for you, and will remember you in my prayer, 17. That the God of our Lord JESUS Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation for the knowledge of him
  • And enlightened eyes: of your understanding, that ye may know which is the hope of your
calling, and which is the riches of his glorious inheritance in his saints, 19. And which is the exceeding greatness of his power toward us, which we believe according to the working of his mighty strength,
  • Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his right hand in heaven.
  • over all principality, power, authority, dominion, and all that may be called, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come.
  • And hath put all things under his feet, and hath made him head of the church over all, 23. Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.
    (Ephesians)
    Chapter 2
The misery of man apart from Christ and the blessed state in Christ.
  • And also unto you, being dead in trespasses and sins,
  • In whom ye have walked according to the course of this world, and according to the prince that ruleth in the air, even according to the spirit that worketh at this time in the children of unbelief,
  • Among whom also we all formerly walked in the lusts of our flesh, doing the will of the flesh and of the mind, and were also the children of wrath by nature, as were
