Luther Bible 1545 (English)
also the rest; 4. But God, who is rich in mercy, by his great love hath loved us: 5. Being dead in sins, he hath quickened us together with Christ: for by grace are ye saved.
  • And hath raised us up together with him, and hath seated us together with him in the heavenly estate in Christ JESUS,
  • That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace by his kindness toward us in Christ JESUS.
  • For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God; 9. Not of works, lest any man should boast.
  • For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, for which God hath prepared us beforehand, that we should walk therein.
  • Remember therefore, that ye which were once Gentiles after the flesh, and were called the foreskin of them which are called circumcision after the flesh, which is with the hand, 12. That ye were then without Christ, strangers, and aliens from the citizenship of Israel, and strangers from the testaments of promise: therefore ye had no hope, and were without God in the world.
  • But now ye which are in Christ JEsu, and were once far off, are now made nigh by the blood of Christ.
  • For he is our peace, which hath made the two one, and hath broken down the fence that was between them, in that by his flesh he hath taken away the enmity, 15. To wit, the law which was given in commandments, that he might make of two a new man in himself, and make peace,
  • And that he might reconcile them both to God in one body by the cross, and put to death the enmity by himself.
  • And came preaching peace in the gospel unto you that were afar off, and to them that were nigh.
  • For by him we have access both in one Spirit unto the Father.
(Epistle on the day of Philip and James.)
  • So then you are no longer sojourners and strangers, but citizens with the saints and members of God’s household,
  • Built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ being the cornerstone.
  • Upon which the whole building, being joined together, groweth unto a holy temple in the Lord,
  • Upon whom also ye are built for a dwelling place of God. in the Spirit].
    (Ephesians)
    Chapter 3
Price of preaching as a means of conversion.
  • Therefore I Paul, the prisoner of Christ JEsu for you Gentiles, 2. after ye have heard of the ministration of the grace of God which is given unto me toward you, 3. That this mystery was made known unto me by revelation, as I have written in brief above, 4. That, when ye have read it, ye may know my mind by the mystery of Christ, 5. Which was not made known in times past unto the children of men, but is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit,
  • That the Gentiles should be heirs, and should be incorporated, and should be fellow partakers of his promise in Christ through the gospel,
  • that I have become a servant according to the gift of the grace of God, which is given me according to his mighty power:
  • To me, the least of all the saints, is given this grace, to proclaim among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ.
  • And to make every man know the fellowship of the mystery which was hid from the world in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ,
  • That now the manifold wisdom of God might be made known to the principalities and dominions of heaven in the church.
  • According to the purpose of the world, which he hath shewed in Christ Jesus our Lord, 12. By whom we have joy and access in all confidence through faith in him.
(Epistle on the sixteenth Sunday after Trinity,)
  • Wherefore I pray you, that ye be not weary because of my afflictions which I suffer for you, which are an honour unto you.
  • Therefore I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15. Who is the true father of all that are called children in heaven and in earth, 16. That he would give you power according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened by his Spirit in the inner man,
  • and Christ to dwell in your hearts by faith, and to be rooted and established by love, 18. That ye may understand with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height, 19. Knowing also that to love Christ is far better than all knowledge, that ye may be filled with all the fulness of God.
or: the love of Christ, which surpasses all knowledge.
  • But to him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or understand, according to the power that is in us,
  • To whom be glory in the church which is in Christ JEsu for ever and ever! Amen]
    (Ephesians)
    Chapter 4
Exhortation to godliness and unity. Warning against sins and burdens.
(Epistle to the seventeenth Sunday after Trinity.)
  • Now therefore I, a prisoner in the Lord, exhort you to walk according to your calling, wherein ye are called,
  • with all humility and meekness, with patience, bearing with one another in love 3. And be diligent to keep unity in the Spirit through the bond of peace.
  • One body and one Spirit, even as ye are called unto one hope of your calling.
  • one Lord, one faith, one baptism,
  • one God and Father (our) of all, who is over you all, and through you all, and in you all].
  • But to every one of us grace is given according to the measure of the gift of Christ.
  • Therefore saith he, He ascended up on high, and led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men.
  • But that he hath ascended, what is it but that he went down first into the lowest parts of the earth?
  • He that descended is he that ascended above all heavens, that he might fill all things.
  • And he made some apostles, and some prophets, and some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers,
  • That the saints may be prepared for the work of the ministry, edifying the body of Christ, 13. Until we all come to the same faith, and to the same knowledge of the Son of God, and
become a perfect man, according to the measure of the perfect age of Christ, 14. That we should be no more children, to be weighed, and to be lulled with every wind of doctrine, through the craftiness of men, and deceit, that they might deceive us.
  • But let us be righteous in love, and let us increase in all things in him who is the head, even Christ,
  • Of whom the whole body is joined together, and one member is joined to another through all the joints, giving one hand to another according to the work of each member in his measure, and causing the body to grow for its own good; and all this in love: 17. I say therefore, and bear witness in the Lord, that ye walk no more as the rest of the Gentiles walk, according to the vanity of their mind,
  • Whose minds are darkened, and are alienated from the life that is of God, through the ignorance that is in them, through the blindness of their hearts.
  • Which are profane, and give themselves up to fornication, and do all manner of uncleanness, and covetousness.
  • But ye have not so learned Christ,
  • If ye have heard otherwise of him, and have been taught in him, how that in JESUS there is a righteousness.
(Epistle on the nineteenth Sunday after
  • Put away from you therefore, according to the former manner of life, the old man, which through lusts is corrupted into error.
  • But renew yourselves in the spirit of your mind.
  • And put on the new man, created after God in righteousness and holiness.
  • Wherefore put away falsehood, and speak the truth, every man to his neighbour; for we are members one of another.
  • Be angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath. Neither pray ye room to the blasphemer.
  • Let him that hath stolen steal no more, but work, and with his hands create some good thing, that he may have to give to the needy].
  • Let no idle talk proceed out of your mouths, but that which is profitable for correction, when it is needful, that it may be pleasant to hear.
  • And grieve not the Holy Spirit of God, that ye may be sealed unto the day of redemption.
  • Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and blasphemy, and all malice, be put away from you.
  • But be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God forgave you in Christ.
    (Ephesians)
    Chapter 5
Distant exhortation to a holy walk. Lesson for the wives and husbands.
    (Epistle on Sunday Oculi.)
  • Therefore, be followers of God as the dear children!
  • And walk in love, even as Christ loved us, and offered himself for us a gift and a sacrifice, unto God for a sweet savour.
  • But fornication, and all uncleanness, and covetousness, let it not be said of you, as it is lawful for the saints,
  • Even shameful words, and foolish defenses, or jestings, which befit you not, but rather thanksgivings.
  • For this ye shall know, that no fornicator, or unclean person, or covetous person (which is an idolater), hath inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.
  • Let no one deceive you with vain words! For because of these, the wrath of God comes upon the children of unbelief.
  • Therefore be not their fellows!
  • For ye were once darkness: but now are ye a light in the Lord.
  • Walk as the children of light! The fruit of the Spirit is all kindness and righteousness and truth].
