Luther Bible 1545 (English)
ye may be quiet, and do your own work, and work with your own hands, as we commanded you,
  • That ye may walk uprightly toward them that are without, and have no need of them.
(Epistle on the twenty-fifth Sunday after Trinity.)
  • But we would not, brethren, keep you from them that sleep, lest ye be sorrowful like unto them which have no hope.
  • For if we believe that JESUS died and rose again, God also will bring with him those who have fallen asleep through JESUS.
  • For this we say unto you by the word of the LORD, that we which are alive and remain unto the future of the LORD shall not precede them which are asleep.
  • For he himself, the LORD, shall come down from heaven with a shout, and with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first.
  • And we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.
  • Comfort yourselves therefore with these words one to another:]
    (1 Thessalonians)
    Chapter 5
Of the time of the last day, and how one should prepare oneself properly for it.
(Epistle on the twenty-seventh Sunday after Trinity.)
  • But of the times and hours, brethren, it is not necessary to write unto you.
  • For ye yourselves know that the day of the LORD shall come as a thief in the night.
  • For when they shall say, There is peace, there is no danger: then destruction shall quickly overtake them, as the sorrow of a woman with child; and they shall not escape.
  • But ye, brethren, be not in darkness, that the day should seize you as a thief.
  • Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.
  • Let us not therefore sleep as others sleep, but let us watch and be sober.
  • For they that sleep sleep by night: and they that are drunken are drunken by night.
  • But we which are of the day must be sober, clothed with the cancer of faith and love, and with the helmet of hope unto salvation.
  • For God hath not set us to wrath, but to possess salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, 10. Who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live at the same time with him.
  • Wherefore exhort one another, and build one another up, as ye do].
  • But we beseech you, brethren, that ye know them which labour in you, and that preside over you in the Lord, and admonish you.
  • Have them the more gladly for their work’s sake, and be at peace with them.
  • And we exhort you, brethren, admonish the unruly, comfort the fainthearted, bear with the weak, be patient with everyone.
  • Take heed that no man repay evil for evil, but pursue good always, both to one another, and to every man.
  • be joyful always!
  • Pray without ceasing!
  • Be thankful in all things: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus toward you.
  • do not dampen the spirit!
  • Despise not the prophecy.
  • But try all things, and keep that which is good.
  • shun all evil appearances!
  • But he, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through, and let your spirit be kept whole, with soul and body, blameless unto the future of our Lord JEsu Christ.
  • Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it.
  • Dear brothers, pray for us!
  • greet all the brothers with the holy kiss.
  • I adjure you by the Lord, that ye will cause this epistle to be read unto all the holy brethren.
  • The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.
To the Thessalonians, the first, written from Corinth.

The second letter of Paul to the Thessalonians (2 Thessalonians) ^
    Chapter 1
    Exhortation to persevere in persecution.
  • Paul and Silvanus and Timothy:
To the church of Thessalonica in GOD our Father, and to the LORD JEsu Christo.
  • Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.
( Epistle on the twenty-sixth Sunday after Trinity.)
  • We ought always to give thanks unto God for you, brethren, as is right. For your faith is greatly increased, and the love of every one of you toward one another is increased, 4. So that we may boast of you among the churches of God from your patience and faith in all your persecutions and afflictions which you endure, –
  • Which signifieth that God will judge aright, and ye shall be worthy of the kingdom of God, above which ye also suffer,
  • For it is right with God to repay tribulation to those who put tribulation upon you, 7. But unto you that are afflicted, rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with the angels of his power.
  • And with flames of fire to give vengeance upon them that know not God, And on them that are not obedient to the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ;
  • Which shall suffer torment, eternal destruction, from the presence of the LORD, and from his glorious power,
  • When he shall come, that he may appear glorious with his saints, and marvellous with all them that believe. For our testimony unto you of that day ye have believed].
  • And therefore we pray for you always, that our God may make you worthy of the calling, and fulfill all the good pleasure of goodness, and the work of faith in power, 12. That the name of our Lord JESUS Christ may be praised in you, and ye in him, according to the grace of our God, and of the Lord JESUS Christ.
    (2 Thessalonians)
    Chapter 2
Prophecy of the Antichrist before the last future of the Lord.
  • But for the future of our Lord JEsu Christ, and of our assembling together unto him, we beseech you, brethren,
  • That ye be not soon moved of mind, nor troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letters, as sent from us, that the day of Christ should be at hand.
  • Let no man deceive you in any way. For he cometh not, except the apostasy come first, and the man of sin be revealed, and the child of perdition,
  • Who is an abominable man, and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or God’s service; so that he setteth himself in the temple of God as a god, and pretendeth that he is God.
  • Remember ye not that, while I was yet with you, I told you these things?
  • And whatsoever it is that stoppeth, know ye that he shall be revealed in his time.
  • For wickedness is already stirring up secretly, and he that stoppeth it now must be put away.
  • And then shall that wicked man be revealed, whom the LORD shall destroy with the spirit of his mouth, and shall make an end of him by the appearing of his coming,
  • That which is to come after the working of Satan with all manner of lying powers, and signs, and wonders.
  • And with all deception of unrighteousness among them that perish, because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.
  • Therefore God will send them strong error,- that they may believe the lie, 12. That they all may be judged who believe not the truth, but have pleasure in unrighteousness.
  • And we ought always to give thanks unto God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation in sanctification of the Spirit, and in the faith of the truth,
  • Whereunto he hath called you by our gospel unto the glorious possession of our Lord JEsu Christ.
  • Stand ye therefore, brethren, and keep the statutes which ye are taught, whether by our word or by our epistle.
  • But he our Lord Jesus Christ, And God and our Father, who hath loved us, and given us an everlasting consolation and a good hope through grace,
  • Who shall admonish your hearts, and strengthen you in all doctrine and good works.
    (2 Thessalonians)
    Chapter 3
For the course of the gospel one should pray, shunning idleness and forwardness.
  • Further, brethren, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may run and be magnified, as it doth among you;
  • and that we may be delivered from evil and wicked men. For faith is not for every man.
  • But the LORD is faithful; he will strengthen you, and keep you from evil.
  • But we take care of you in the LORD, that ye do, and that ye will do, all that we command you.
  • But let the LORD direct your hearts unto the love of God, and unto the patience of Christ.
  • Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord JESUS Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly, and not after the statutes which he received of us.
  • For ye know how ye ought to follow us. For we have not been disorderly among you, 8. Neither have we taken bread of any man in vain: but with labour and travail day and night have we wrought, that we should not be a burden to any of you;
  • Not that we have not power, but that we give ourselves for an ensample unto you to follow us.
  • And when we were with you, we commanded you these things, that if any man will not work, neither shall he eat.
  • For we hear that there are some of you that walk disorderly, and work nothing, but are froward.
  • But unto such we command and admonish them by our Lord Jesus Christ, that they work quietly, and eat their own bread.
  • But ye, brethren, be not weary in doing good.
  • But if any man obey not our word, mark him with a letter, and have nothing
