Luther Bible 1545 (English)
to do with him, that he may be ashamed.
Yet hold him not as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother.
And may he, the LORD of peace, give you peace in every place and in every way. The LORD be with you all.
The salutation with mine hand, Paul’s hand. This is the sign in all the epistles; so I write.
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.

The first letter of Paul to Timothy (1 Timothy) ^
Chapter 1
The doctrine of the law and the gospel explained by Paul’s example.
Paul, an apostle of JEsu Christ, according to the commandment of GOD our Saviour, and of the LORD JEsu Christ, who is our hope:
Timothy, my righteous son in faith. Grace, mercy, peace from God our Father and our Lord Jesus Christ.
As I exhorted thee to tarry at Ephesus, when I went into Macedonia, and commanded some that they should not teach otherwise,
Neither heed the fables, and the genealogies, which have no end, and bring up questions, more than correction to God in faith.
For the chief sum of the commandment is love from a pure heart, and from a good conscience, and from unfeigned faith,
Of whom some have erred, and turned aside unto vain babblings, 7. Want to be masters of the Scriptures, and do not understand what they say or what they set.
But we know that the law is good, if any man use it aright,
Knowing this, that no law is given to the righteous, but to the unrighteous and rebellious, to the wicked and sinners, to the unholy and unspiritual, to murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, to slayers,
The fornicators, the rapists, the thieves, the liars, the perjurers, and so forth contrary to sound doctrine:
According to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which is committed unto me.
And I thank our Lord JESUS Christ, which hath made me strong, and hath kept me faithful, and set me in the ministry,
Who before was a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and a reproach. But mercy hath been shown me: for I did it ignorantly, in unbelief.
But the more abundant was the grace of our Lord, with faith and love, which is in Christ Jesus.
For this is certainly true, and your precious word, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the chief.
But for this cause mercy was shewed me, that in me first of all Jesus Christ might shew all patience as an example unto them which should believe on him unto eternal life.
But to God, the eternal King, the incorruptible and invisible, and the only wise, be glory and honor forever and ever. Amen.
This commandment I command thee, my son Timotheus, according to the former prophecies concerning thee, that thou exercise good chivalry in the same.
And have faith and a good conscience, which some have cast off, and have been shipwrecked in the faith;
Among whom is Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have delivered unto Satan, that they should be chastened to blaspheme no more.
(1 Timothy)
Chapter 2
How and when prayer is to be offered by men and women in the church.
I exhort therefore, that before all things, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men,
For kings and for all authorities, that we may lead a quiet and tranquil life in all godliness and honourableness.
For these things are good, and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour, 4. Who desires all men to be helped, and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, even the man Christ JEsus, 6. Who gave himself for salvation for all, that these things should be preached in his time; 7. For I am set apart to be a preacher and an apostle (speaking the truth in Christ, and not lying), a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.
I will therefore that men pray in every place, and lift up holy hands, without wrath and doubting.
Likewise also the women, that they adorn themselves in dainty apparel with shame and modesty, not with braids, or gold, or pearls, or precious apparel, 10. But as it behoveth women to shew godliness by good works.
let a woman learn in silence with all submissiveness.
But I will not suffer a woman to teach, neither will I suffer her to be master over her husband, but to be quiet.
For Adam was made first, and Eve after him.
And Adam was not deceived: but the woman was deceived, and brought in transgression.
But they shall be saved through childbearing, if they continue in faith, and in love, and in sanctification, with chastening.
(1 Timothy)
Chapter 3
Of the nature of the church servants and their relatives, of the church, of the mystery of godliness.
This is certainly true, that if any man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a goodly work.
But let a bishop be blameless, a wife’s husband, sober, temperate, sedentary, hospitable, doctrinal,
not a winebibber, not a throbber, not a dishonest handler, but mild, not vindictive, not stingy, 4. Who hath well presided over his own house, who hath obedient children with all respectability.
(But if a man know not to preside over his own house, how shall he provide for the church of God?),
Not a neophyte, lest he puff himself up, and fall into the judgment of the blasphemer.
But he must also have a good report of them that are without, lest he fall into the blasphemers’
shame and snare.
Likewise the servants shall be honourable, not double-minded, not winebibbers, not dealing dishonestly.
Who have the mystery of faith in a pure conscience.
10: And let them be tried first, and then let them serve, if they be blameless.
Likewise their wives shall be honourable, not blasphemous, sober, faithful in all things.
Let every man’s servants be the husband of one wife, and let them take heed to their children, and to their own houses.
But they that serve well obtain for themselves a good degree, and great joy in the faith which is in Christ JESUS.
These things write I unto thee, and hope to come unto thee most surely.
But if I delay, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to walk in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth.
And great is the mystery of God: God is manifested in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, made manifest to angels, preached to the Gentiles, believed on by the world, received up into glory.
(1 Timothy)
Chapter 4
Warning against seduction of the last time. Exhortation to the practice of godliness.
But the Spirit saith clearly, that in the last times some shall depart from the faith, and shall cleave unto the seducing spirits and doctrines of devils.
by them that are liars in craftiness, and have brandings in their consciences 3. and forbid to marry and to shun the food which God has created, to take with thanksgiving, the believers and those who know the truth.
For all the creature of God is good, and nothing reprobate that is received with thanksgiving.
For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.
If thou reprove these things unto the brethren, thou shalt be a good minister of JESUS Christ, in the words of faith and good doctrine, whereunto thou hast always been.
But abstain from unspiritual things, and from fables of old. But exercise thyself in godliness.
For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness profiteth all things, and hath promise of this life, and of that which is to come.
This is ever certainly true, and a dear word.
For to this end we also labour, and are reproached, because we have hoped in the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, and especially of them that believe.
Give and teach these things.
Let no man despise thy youth, but be thou an example to the faithful in word, in walk, in love, in spirit, in faith, in chastity.
stop reading, exhorting, teaching, until I come!
Forsake not the gift that is given thee by the prophecy with the laying on of the hands of the elders.
Wait for these things, that thy increase may be manifest in all things.
Take heed to thyself, and to the doctrine; persevere in these things. For where thou doest these things, thou shalt save thyself, and they that hear thee.
(1 Timothy)
Chapter 5
How a preacher should conduct himself against persons of different station and age, and against himself.
Rebuke not an old man, but admonish him as a father, the young as brethren, 2. the old women as the mothers, the young as the sisters with all chastity.
Honour widows that are widows indeed.
But if a widow have children, or nephews, let them first learn to rule their own houses godly, and repay their parents likewise: for this is well done, and acceptable in the sight of God.
Now this is a true widow, which is lonely, and putteth her hope in God, and continueth in prayer and supplication day and night.
But she that liveth in lusts is dead alive.
These things give, that they may be blameless.
But if any man provide not for his own, especially for the members of his household, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than a heathen.
Let no widow be mentioned that is under threescore years old, or that hath been a man’s wife, 10. Who hath testified of good works, when she hath brought up children, when she hath been hospitable, when she hath washed the saints’ feet, when she hath ministered to the afflicted, when she hath done all good works.
But abstain
