Luther Bible 1545 (English)
shall dwell in safety alone: the fountain of Jacob shall be in the land, where there is corn and wine; and his
heaven shall drop with dew.
Blessed art thou, O Israel, who is like thee? O people, that thou mayest be saved by the LORD, Who is the shield of thy help, And the sword of thy victory! Thine enemies shall lack; But thou shalt tread upon their high places.
(Deuteronomy)
Chapter 34
Moses’ death and what followed it.
And Moses passed over from the plains of Moab unto mount Nebo, unto the top of mount Pisgah, toward Jericho. And the LORD shewed him all the land of Gilead, even unto Dan.
And all Naphtali, and the land of Ephraim, and Manasseh, and all the land of Judah, unto the uttermost sea.
And toward the south, and the region of the breadth of Jericho, the city of palm trees, unto Zoar.
And the LORD said unto him, This is the land which I sware unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, saying, I will give it unto thy seed. Thou hast seen it with thine eyes, but thou shalt not pass over.
So Moses the servant of the LORD died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the LORD.
And he buried him in the valley, in the land of Moab, over against the house of Peor. And no man hath known his sepulchre unto this day.
And Moses was an hundred and twenty years old when he died. His eyes had not grown dim, nor his strength decayed.
And the children of Israel wept for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days. And the days of weeping and lamentation over Moses were fulfilled.
And Joshua the son of Nun was filled with the spirit of wisdom: for Moses had laid his hands upon him. And the children of Israel hearkened unto him, and did as the LORD commanded Moses.
And there arose no prophet in Israel after the manner of Moses, whom the LORD knew face to face.
For all manner of signs and wonders, wherewith the LORD sent him to do them in the land
of Egypt, to Pharaoh, and to all his servants, and to all his land,
And to all this mighty hand and great vision, which Moses did in the sight of all Israel.

The Book of Joshua ^
Chapter 1
Joshua is strengthened in his profession.
After the death of Moses the servant of the LORD, the LORD spake unto Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ servant:
Moses my servant is dead: now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, thou, and all this people, unto the land which I have given unto them, even to the children of Israel.
All the places whereon the soles of your feet shall tread have I given you, as I spake unto Moses.
From the wilderness, and this Lebanon, unto the great river Phrath, all the land of the Hittites, unto the great sea westward, shall be your border.
No man shall withstand thee all the days of thy life. As I was with Moses, so will I be with thee. I will not leave thee, nor depart from thee.
Be thou confident and undaunted: for thou shalt divide unto this people the land which I sware unto their fathers to give them.
Only be thou confident and very joyful, that thou keep and do all things according to the law which Moses my servant commanded thee. Depart not from it, to the right hand, or to the left, that thou mayest do wisely in all that thou shalt do.
And let not the book of this law depart out of thy mouth, but consider it day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein. Then you will be successful in everything you do, and you will be able to act wisely.
Behold, I have commanded thee to be confident and joyful. Be not afraid, neither be dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee in all that thou shalt do.
Then Joshua commanded the captains of the people, saying:
Pass through the camp, and command the people, saying, Get ye victuals: for three days shall ye pass over this Jordan, to come in and possess the land which the LORD your God giveth you.
And unto the Reubenites, and the Gadites, and the half tribe of Manasseh, said Joshua: 13. Remember the word which Moses the servant of the LORD spake unto you, saying, The LORD your God hath given you rest, and hath given you this land.
Let your wives and your children and your cattle dwell in the land which Moses gave you on this side Jordan: but go ye before your brethren armed, as valiant men, and help them, 15. Till the LORD bring your brethren also to rest, as he bringeth you, that they also may possess the land which the LORD your God giveth them. Then shall ye return unto your own land, which Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you to possess, on this side Jordan, toward the rising of the sun.
And they answered Joshua, and said: All that thou hast commanded us we will do; and whither thou sendest us we will go.
As we were obedient unto Moses, so will we be obedient unto thee: only that the LORD thy God may be with thee, as he was with Moses.
Whosoever shall disobey thy mouth, and shall not obey thy words in all that thou givest us, he shall surely die. Only be of good courage and undaunted.
(Joshua)
Chapter 2
The scouts are rescued at Rahab.
And Joshua the son of Nun sent two spies secretly from Shittim, saying, Go, visit the land, and Jericho. And they went, and came into the house of a harlot named Rahab, and entered into her.
And it was told the king of Jericho, saying, Behold, there are men come in this night of the children of Israel to search the land.
And the king of Jericho sent unto Rahab, saying, Bring forth the men that are come to thee into thine house: for they are come to search out all the land.
But the woman hid the two men, and said thus, Men came in unto me, but I knew not whence they were.
And when they were about to shut the gates, because it was dark, they went out, that I know not whither they went. Chase after them with haste; for ye shall seize them.
And she let them go up upon the roof, and hid them under the stalks of flax, which she had spread for them upon the roof.
And the men pursued after them by the way of Jordan unto the fords. And they shut the gate, when they were gone out that pursued after them.
And before the men lay down to sleep, she went up unto them upon the housetop.
And said unto them: I know that the LORD hath given you the land: for terror is fallen upon us because of you, and all the inhabitants of the land are become cowards before your coming.
For we have heard how the LORD dried up the waters of the Red sea from before you, when ye came out of Egypt; and what ye did unto the two kings of the Amorites, Sihon and Og, on the other side Jordan, how ye destroyed them.
And since we have heard these things, our heart is troubled, and there is no more courage in any man for your future: for the LORD your God is one God, both in heaven above, and in earth beneath.
Now therefore swear unto me by the LORD, that, because I have shewed mercy unto you, ye also shew mercy unto my father’s house; and give me a sure sign, 13. That ye save my father, and my mother, and my brethren, and my sisters, and all that they have, and deliver our souls from death.
And the men said unto her, If we do not do mercy and faithfulness unto thee, when the LORD giveth us the land, our soul shall be put to death for you, except thou betray our business.
And she let them down by the rope through the window: for her house was upon the wall of the city, and she dwelt upon the wall.
And she said unto them: Go up into the mountain, that they which pursue you meet not; and hide yourselves there three days, until they that pursue you come again: and afterward go your way.
And the men said unto her, But we will be loosed from the oath which thou hast taken from us,
When we come into the land, and thou hast not tied this red cord in the window, that thou mightest let us down, and gather unto thee into the house thy father, and thy mother, and thy brethren, and all thy father’s house.
And whosoever goeth out at the door of thine house, let his blood be upon his head, and we be guiltless: but of all that are in thine house, if a hand be laid upon them, their blood shall be upon our head.
And if thou shalt say any thing of this business of ours, we will be loosed from the oath which thou hast taken of us.
And she said, Let it be as ye say; and let them go. And they went. And she knotted the red rope in the window.
And they went and came to the mountains, and abode there three days, until they that pursued them should return. For they sought them in all the highways, but found them not.
So the two men returned, and went down from the
