Biography

Aron Solomonovich Lande (sometimes Lyande; literary pseudonym — Alexander Samoilovich Izgoev; April 11, 1872, Vilna — July 11, 1935, Haapsalu, Estonia) — Russian lawyer, politician and publicist, teacher. One of the leaders of the right-wing cadets, a Vekhovite.

Born into the family of a graduate of the Faculty of Oriental Languages ​​of St. Petersburg University, teacher of the Vilna Rabbinical School, Solomon Vladimirovich Lande and Khristina Ilyinichna Lande. In 1889 he graduated from the Minsk gymnasium.

In 1889-1894 he was a student at the Faculty of Medicine at Tomsk University, participated in the student movement, and became acquainted with Marxism. He was expelled from the university for political unreliability. Due to the threat of arrest, he left Russia in 1894 and studied social sciences in France. Returning to Russia, he studied in 1896 at the Faculty of Law of Novorossiysk University (Odessa), from which he graduated in 1900. Subsequently — professor at Novorossiysk University.

In the 1890s he was a legal Marxist. Izgoev was never, in his words, “a social democrat in the party sense of the word,” but until 1904 he “maintained contact with local social democratic organizations.” In 1902, having become disillusioned with Marxism, he became an employee of the liberal weekly journal Southern Notes. He participated in the creation of the Union of Liberation and collaborated with a number of liberal publications. In January 1906, at the 2nd Congress of the Constitutional Democratic Party, he was elected to the Central Committee (1906-1918), in which he joined the right wing. In 1909 he was a participant in the collection “Milestones”.

After the October Revolution, he participated in the underground publication of the newspapers “Fight” and “Nash Vek”, calling for armed uprisings against Bolshevism. Arrested in November 1918; in January 1919 he was released at the request of M. Gorky. In September 1919 he was arrested again, in September 1920 he was sent from the concentration camp to the disposal of the scientific and technical department of the Supreme Economic Council, and then released in March 1921. In August 1922 he was arrested again and released in October. In November 1922 he was deported to Germany.
