Prayer against the enemies of the church.

O Lord, why art thou so far off, and hidest thyself in the time of trouble?

Because the wicked doeth wickedness, the wretched suffereth. They cling to each other and devise evil deeds.

For the wicked boasteth himself of his boldness, and the covetous blesseth himself, and blasphemeth the LORD.

The wicked is so proud and angry that he asks no man; in all his wickedness he thinks God is nothing.

He continueth in his doings for ever: thy judgments are far from him: he dealeth fiercely with all his enemies.

He saith in his heart, I shall never be laid low; there shall be no need for me for ever.

His mouth is full of cursing, of falsehood, and of deceit; his tongue worketh toil and trouble.

He sitteth and lieth in wait in the courts; he slayeth the innocent in secret; his eyes keep upon the poor.

He lieth in wait in secret, as a lion in the den: he lieth in wait to catch the wretch, and catcheth him in his net.

He breaketh and presseth down, and thrusteth to the ground the poor man with violence.

He saith in his heart, God hath forgotten; he hath hid his face, he shall never see it.

Arise, O LORD God, lift up thy hand; forget not the afflicted.

Why should the wicked blaspheme God, and say in his heart: You do not ask for it?

Thou seest, for thou beholdest the affliction and misery; it is in thy hands. The poor command thee: thou art the helper of the fatherless.

Break the arm of the wicked, and seek evil; and his wickedness shall never be found.

The LORD is king for ever and ever: the heathen must perish out of his land.

Thou hearest the desire of the afflicted, O LORD: their heart is sure that thine ear is attentive unto it,

That thou mayest do right to the fatherless and to the poor, that man should no more be inconvenienced in the earth.

Comfort against the enemy consists in right trust in God.

A psalm of David, to be sung. I trust in the LORD. How say ye then unto my soul, that it shall fly as a bird upon your mountains?

For, behold, the wicked draw the bow, and put their arrows in the string, to shoot the pious in secret.

For they pluck up the ground: what shall the righteous man do?

The LORD is in his holy temple, the LORD’S throne is in heaven: his eyes do behold, his eyelids do try the children of men.

The LORD trieth the righteous: his soul hateth the wicked, and them that love to transgress.

He shall rain upon the wicked lightning, and fire, and brimstone, and shall give them a weather for a reward.

The LORD is righteous, and loveth righteousness: therefore their faces look unto that which is right.

Help, O Lord, the saints are diminished, and the faithful are few among the children of men.

One speaketh evil with another, and pretendeth, and teacheth out of a divided heart.

Let the LORD cut off all hypocrisy, and the tongue that speaketh proudly, 5. Who say, Let our tongue have the preeminence, and let us speak: who is our Lord?

Because the miserable are cast down, and the poor groan, I will arise, saith the LORD; and I will make a help to teach with confidence.

The word of the LORD is pure, as silver refined in an earthen vessel, proved seven times.

Thou, O LORD, wilt preserve them, and keep us from this generation for ever.

For it is filled with ungodly men everywhere, where such loose men rule among men.

O Lord, how long wilt thou forget me? How long wilt thou hide thy face from me?

How long shall I be troubled in my soul, and afraid in my heart daily? How long shall my enemy rise up against me?

Look upon me, O LORD my God, and hear me. Enlighten mine eyes, that I fall not asleep in death,

Lest mine enemy boast that he hath become mighty over me, and mine adversaries rejoice not that I am cast down.

But I hope that thou wilt be gracious: my heart rejoiceth that thou wilt help so gladly. I will sing unto the LORD, That he hath done so well for me.

Doctrine of the ruin of the human race and its help.

A psalm of David, to be sung. The foolish say in their heart, There is no God. They are good for nothing, and are an abomination with their nature. There is none that doeth good.

The LORD looketh from heaven on the children of men, to see if any man be wise, and asketh after God.

But they are all gone astray, and are all unfit: there is none that doeth good, not one.

Will not any of the transgressors know it, which devour my people, that they feed, but call not upon the LORD?

There they fear: but God is with the generation of the righteous.

Ye desecrate the poor man’s counsel: but God is his confidence.

Oh that help would come upon Israel out of Zion, and that the LORD would deliver his captive people! Then Jacob shall rejoice, and Israel shall be glad.

A psalm of David. O LORD, who shall dwell in thy tabernacle? Who shall dwell in thy holy mountain?

He that walketh without change, and doeth right, and speaketh the truth from the heart; 3. He that slandereth not with his tongue, neither doeth evil to his neighbour, nor reproacheth his neighbour;

He that esteemeth not the wicked, but honoureth the godly: he that sweareth unto his neighbour, and keepeth it;

He that giveth not his money usurpingly, and taketh not gifts above the innocent: he that doeth these things shall abide.

A golden jewel of David. Keep me, O God: for I trust in thee.

I said unto the LORD, Thou art the LORD; I must suffer for thy sake.

For the saints that are on the earth, and for the glorious ones: in them have I all my pleasure.

But they that go after another shall have great sorrow of heart. I will not sacrifice their libation
with the blood, nor take their name in my mouth.

But the LORD is my goods and my portion: thou shalt receive my inheritance.

The lot is fallen unto me for a goodly thing: a goodly inheritance is become unto me.

I praise the LORD, which hath counseled me: my kidneys also chasten me at night.

I have the LORD always before me: for he is at my right hand, and I shall dwell.

Therefore my heart rejoiceth, and my glory is glad: my flesh also shall lie down in safety.

For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, nor suffer thy saint to perish.

Thou hast made known unto me the way of life: before thee is fullness of joy, and gladness at thy right hand for ever.

A prayer of David. Hear, O Lord, righteousness; hearken unto my cry; hear my prayer, which cometh not out of a false mouth.

speak thou in my cause, and look thou to the law!

Thou hast searched my heart, and visited it by night; thou hast purged me, and found nothing.
I have purposed that my mouth should not transgress.

I keep myself in the word of thy lips from the works of man in the way of the murderer.

Keep my walk upon thy footsteps, that my treads slide not.

I cry unto thee, that thou, O God, mayest hear me: incline thine ear unto me, hear my speech.
