For thy sake I bear reproach, my face is full of shame.

I am become a stranger unto my brethren, and unknown unto my mother’s children.

For I am almost jealous for thine house: and the reproach of them that reproach thee is upon me.

And I weep, and fast bitterly; and they mock me for it.

I have put on sackcloth; but they make a mockery of it.

They that sit in the gate wash of me; and in the taverns they sing of me.

But I pray thee, O LORD, in due season. God, through your great goodness, hear me with your faithful help!

Pour out thy displeasure upon them, and let thy fierce anger seize them.

Let their habitation be desolate, and let none dwell in their tents.

For they persecute him whom thou hast smitten, and boast that thou hast smitten thine own with evil.

Let them fall into one sin upon another, that they come not unto thy righteousness.

Blot them out of the book of the living, that they be not written with the righteous.

But I am wretched, and I am in woe. God, your help protect me!

I will praise the name of God with a song, and will highly honor him with thanksgiving.

This shall please the LORD better than a bullock that hath horns and hoofs.

The wretched see and rejoice; and those who seek God, their hearts will live.

For the LORD heareth the poor, and despiseth not his prisoners.

make haste, O GOD, to save me, O LORD, to help me!

They that desire my soul shall be ashamed and confounded: they that wish me ill shall return and be heard,

Let them that seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee: and let them that love thy salvation say always, Blessed be God.

Prayer for salvation.

O LORD, I trust in thee: let me never be put to shame.

Save me by thy righteousness, and deliver me: incline thine ear unto me, and help me.

Be thou a stronghold unto me, whither I may always flee, who hast promised to help me: for thou art my rock and my fortress.

My God, save me from the hand of the wicked, from the hand of the unrighteous and the tyrant.

Prophecy of Christ and his kingdom.

To the God of Solomon, give thy judgment unto the king, and thy righteousness unto the king’s son,

That he may bring thy people to righteousness, and save thy afflicted ones.

Let the mountains bring peace among the people, and the hills righteousness.

He shall uphold the wretched people in judgment, and shall help the poor, and shall smite the blasphemers.

They shall fear thee as long as the sun and moon endure, from child to child.

He shall descend as the rain upon the hide, as the drops that wet the land.

In his days shall the righteous flourish, and great peace, till the moon be no more.

Comfort and warning against vexation, concerning the happiness of the wicked.

a psalm of Assaph. Israel nevertheless has GOD for comfort, who only is pure in heart.

And I stumbled with my feet, and my footsteps almost slipped.

For I was grieved with the glorifiers, when I saw that the wicked prospered.

For they are in no ride of death, but stand fast as a palace.

they are not in misfortune like other people and are not afflicted like other people.

Therefore their defiance shall be a good thing, and their iniquity shall be called good.

Their person boasteth like a fat belly; they do whatsoever they think fit.

They destroy all things, and speak evil of them, and talk and blaspheme greatly.

What they speak must be spoken from heaven: what they say must be done on earth.

Therefore their rabble falleth unto them, and runneth unto them with heaps like waters.

And say: What should GOD ask of those? What should the Most High regard of them?

Behold, these are the wicked: they are blessed in the world, and wax rich.

Is it then in vain that my heart lives blamelessly, and that I wash my hands in innocency?

And I am afflicted daily, and my punishment is every morning?

I would almost have said as they did: but, behold, I would have damned all thy children that ever were.
