to keep them with thee, and they shall prosper together at thy mouth, 19. That thy hope may be in the LORD. I must daily remind thee of these things for thy good.

Have I not enjoined thee manifoldly with counsels and doctrines?

That I might shew thee a certain ground of truth, that thou mightest answer rightly them that send thee?

Rob not the poor, though he be poor; neither oppress the wretched in the gate; 23. For the LORD shall deal with their cause, and shall subdue their trespassers.

Be not thou a man of wrath, neither be thou a fierce man;

Thou wilt learn his way, and thou wilt give offence to thy soul.

Be not with them that arrest their hand, and become sureties for iniquity; 27. For where thou hast it not to pay, they shall take away thy bed from under thee.

Drive not back the former bounds which thy fathers made.

When thou seest a man at length in his business, he shall stand before kings, and shall not stand before the base.

Chapter 23
Of temperance in eating and drinking.

When thou sittest and eatest with a lord, mark whom thou hast before thee, 2. And put a knife to thy throat, if thou wilt keep life.

desire not his food, for it is false bread.

Seek not to be rich, and leave off thy little bundles.

Let not thine eyes fly unto that which thou canst not have: for the same maketh him wings like an eagle, and biddeth for the heavens.

Eat not bread with an envious man, neither desire thou his meat.

For he is like a ghost within. He saith, Eat and drink; and yet his heart is not in thee.

Thy morsels which thou hast eaten thou must spit out, and must have lost thy kind words.

Not in the ears of a fool, for he despiseth the wisdom of thy words.

Drive not back the former borders, and go not into the orphans’ field.

For their Redeemer is mighty; he shall accomplish their cause against thee.

Give thine heart to discipline, and thine ears to reasonable speech.

Cease not to chasten the lad: for where thou chastenest him with the rod, it is not lawful to kill him.

Thou smitest him with the rod; but thou savest his soul from hell.

My son, if thou be wise, my heart also rejoiceth;

And my kidneys are glad when thy lips speak what is right.

Let not thine heart follow sinners, but be thou daily in the fear of the LORD.

For it shall be well with thee hereafter, and thy waiting shall not fail.

Hear, my son, and be wise, and direct thine heart into the way.

Be not among drunkards and gluttons;

For the drunkard and the glutton are made poor, and a sleeper must wear torn garments.

Obey thy father which begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old.

Buy truth and do not sell it, wisdom, discipline and understanding.

A father of the righteous rejoiceth, and he that hath begotten a wise man rejoiceth.

Let thy father and thy mother rejoice and be glad, which begat thee.

Give me, my son, thy heart, and let thine eyes be well pleased with my ways.

For a harlot is a deep pit, and an adulteress is a narrow pit.

She also lieth in wait like a robber, and gathereth unto her the insolent of men.

where is woe? Where is sorrow? Where is strife? Where is lamentation? Where are wounds without cause? Where are red eyes?

namely, where one lies with the wine and comes to drink up what is poured.

Look not on the wine, because it is red, and standeth so fair in the glass. It is smooth; 32. But afterward he bites like a serpent, and stings like an adder.

Then thine eyes shall look for other consecrations, and thine heart shall speak perverse things,

And thou shalt be as one that sleepeth in the midst of the sea, and as one that sleepeth upon
the top of the mast.

They beat me, but it hurt me not: they knock me, but I feel it not. When will I wake up, that I may do it more?

Chapter 24
Of patience and tolerance.

do not follow evil people and do not desire to be with them.

For their heart seeketh after mischief, and their lips counsel evil.

By wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is preserved.

By proper stewardship the chambers become full of all delicious and lovely riches.

A wise man is strong, and a prudent man is mighty in strength.

For with counsel is war: and where there is much counsel, there is victory.

Wisdom is too high for a fool; he may not open his mouth in the gate.

He that doeth himself harm is called an arch wicked man.

The fool’s guile is sin: and the scoffer is an abomination in the sight of men.

He is not strong that is not steadfast in adversity.

Deliver them that are about to be slain, and withdraw not thyself from them that are about to be strangled.

Sayest thou, Behold, we understand not: thinkest thou not that he that knoweth the heart knoweth it, and he that regardeth the soul knoweth it, and rewardeth a man according to his work?

Eat, my son, honey: for it is good; and the honeycomb is sweet in thy throat.

Learn therefore wisdom for thy soul. If thou find it, thou shalt prosper hereafter, and thy hope shall not be in vain.

Lurk not, as an ungodly man, at the house of the righteous; disturb not his rest.

For the righteous falleth seven times, and riseth up again: but the wicked sink into mischief.

Rejoice not in the fall of thine enemy, neither let thine heart be glad in his calamity; 18. Let the LORD see it, and be displeased with him, and turn away his wrath from him.

Be not angry with the wicked, and jealous not with the ungodly; 20. For the wicked hath no hope, and the lamp of the wicked shall be put out.

My child, fear the LORD and the king, and mingle not with the rebellious.

For their calamity shall be sudden; and who knoweth when both calamities shall come?

This also comes from the wise: To look at the person in judgment is not good.

Whosoever saith unto the wicked, Thou art righteous; men curse him, and the people hate him.

But they that punish are well pleased, and a rich blessing cometh upon them.

A right answer is like a sweet kiss.

Set thy business without, and work thy field; afterward build thine house.

Be not a witness without a cause against thy neighbour, and deceive not with thy mouth.

Say not, As one doeth unto me, so will I do again, and repay every man his work.

I went before the field of the slothful, and before the vineyard of the fool, 31. And, behold, there were nettles in it, and thistles full, and the wall was fallen down.

And when I saw it, I took it to heart, and looked, and learned.

Thou wilt sleep a little, and slumber a little, and put thy hands together a little, that thou mayest rest;

But thy poverty shall come unto thee as a wayfarer, and thy want as a man armed.

Chapter 25
Honor and glory as wisdom’s reward, to whom it is due.

These also are the sayings of Solomon, which the men of Hezekiah king of Judah added unto them.

It is the glory of God to conceal a matter: but the glory of kings is to search out a matter.

The heavens are high, and the earth is low: but the heart of the king is unsearchable.

Put the foam from the silver, and it shall be a pure vessel.

Let the king’s wickedness be done, and his throne shall be established with righteousness.

range not before the king, and enter not into the place of the great.

For it is better for thee that it should be said unto thee, Come up hither; than that thou shouldest be humbled before the prince, that thine eyes should see.

Go not forth soon to quarrel: for what wilt thou do hereafter, when thou hast defiled thy neighbour?

Handle thy business with thy neighbour, and reveal not another’s secrecy, 10. Lest he that heareth it speak evil of thee, and let not thy evil report cease.

A word spoken in his season is as apples of gold in bowls of silver.

He that punisheth a wise man that obeyeth him is as a golden headband, and as a golden collar.

As the cold of the snow in the time of harvest, so is a faithful messenger to him that sent him, and restoreth his lord’s soul.

He that speaketh much, and keepeth not, is as clouds and wind without rain; 15. By patience a prince is reconciled, and a gentle tongue breaketh hardness.

If thou find honey, eat enough of it, that thou be not full, and spit it out.

Remove thy foot from thy neighbour’s house: for he is weary of thee, and hateth thee.

He that speaketh false witness against his neighbour is a spear, and a sword, and a sharp arrow.

The hope of the despiser in time of trouble is as a rotten tooth and a slippery foot.

He that sings songs to an evil heart is as a torn garment in winter, and vinegar upon the chalk.

If thine enemy hunger, feed him with bread; if he thirst, give him drink of water.

For thou shalt heap coals upon his head, and the LORD shall reward thee.

The north wind bringeth tempests, and the secret tongue maketh the face sour.

It is better to sit on the housetop in a corner than to sit in a house with a quarrelsome woman.

a good rumor from distant lands in like cold water to a thirsty soul.

A righteous man falling before an ungodly man is as a turbid well
