folly of a man leadeth him astray, because his heart rageth against the LORD.

good makes many friends; but the poor man is forsaken by his friends.

A false witness shall not go unpunished; and he that speaketh lies boldly shall not escape.

many wait for the person of the prince, and are all friends of him that giveth gifts.

All his brethren hate the poor man, and his friends also are far from him: and he that trusteth in words shall not prosper,

He that is wise loveth his life: and he that hath understanding findeth good.

Cease, my son, to hear the chastening that leadeth away from sound doctrine.

A loose witness mocketh the law, and the mouth of the wicked devoureth iniquity.

Punishments are prepared for the scoffers, and smitings for the backs of fools.

Chapter 20
Warning against gluttony and drunkenness.

Wine maketh froward, and strong drink maketh wild: he that lusteth after it never becometh wise.

The terror of the king is as the roaring of a young lion: he that enrages him sinneth against his life.

It is a man’s honour to be at strife: but they that love to strive are all fools.

Because of the cold the lazy man will not plow; so he must beg in the harvest, and get nothing.

The counsel of a man’s heart is as deep waters: but a man of understanding knoweth what he meaneth.

Many men are called righteous: but who shall find one that is righteously righteous?

A righteous man that walketh in his piety, his children shall prosper after him.

A king that sitteth upon the throne to judge scattereth all evil with his eyes.

Who can say, I am pure in heart, and clean from my sin?

Many weights and measures are both abomination unto the LORD.

A man also knoweth a child by his character, whether he will be pious and upright.

An ear that heareth, and an eye that seeth; the LORD maketh them both.

Love not sleep, lest thou be poor: let thine eyes be open, and thou shalt have bread.

Evil, evil, say they, when they have it; but when it is gone, praise it.

There is gold and much pearl: but a reasonable mouth is a precious jewel.

Take away the garment of him that is a surety for another, and seize him for the sake of him that is not known.

The bread that is stolen is good for every man: but afterward his mouth shall be full of pebbles.

Proposals stand, if they be made with counsel: and war shall be made with discretion.

Be not sworn with him that revealeth secrecy, and with the slanderer, and with the false-mouthed.

It is a snare unto a man to blaspheme that which is holy, and after that to seek vows.

A wise king scattereth the wicked, and bringeth the wheel upon them.

The lamp of the LORD is the breath of man: it passeth through the whole heart.

Piety and truth keep the king, and his throne is established by piety.

The strength of the young is their price; and the gray hair is the ornament of the aged.

The wicked must be restrained with severe punishment, and with sore blows that are felt.

Chapter 21
By God’s gracious government.

The . The king’s heart is in the hand of the LORD, as the rivers of water; and he inclineth it whithersoever he will.

Every man’s way seemeth right unto him: but the LORD only maketh hearts sure.

To do good and to do right is better in the sight of the LORD than sacrifice.

Prideful eyes, and proud courage, and the light of the wicked, is sin.

The smitings of an endued one bring abundance: but he that is too light shall be in want.

He that gathereth treasure with lies shall fall short, and fall among them that seek death.

The robbery of the wicked shall be a reproach unto them: for they would not do that which
was right.

He that walketh in another way is perverse: but he that walketh in his commandment is righteous.

It is better to dwell in the corner of the house upon the housetop, than with a brawling woman in a house together.

The soul of the wicked desireth evil, and grudgeth not his neighbour.

When the scoffer is punished, the foolish become wise; and when a wise man is taught, he becomes sensible.

The righteous keepeth himself wisely against the house of the wicked: but the wicked thinketh only to do harm.

He that stoppeth his ears at the cry of the poor, the same shall cry, and not be heard.

A secret gift quencheth wrath; and a gift in the bosom quencheth fierce anger.

It is a joy to the righteous to do what is right, but a fear to evildoers.

A man that erreth from the way of wisdom abideth in the congregation of the dead.

He that loveth lust shall lack; and he that loveth wine and oil shall not be rich.

The wicked must be given for the righteous, and the scornful for the pious.

It is better to dwell in a desolate land than with a contentious and angry woman.

In the house of the wise is a goodly treasure and oil, but a fool maketh it waste.

He who pursues mercy and goodness finds life, mercy and honor.

A wise man taketh the city of the mighty, and overthroweth their power by their safety.

He that keepeth his mouth and tongue keepeth his soul from fear.

He that is proud and presumptuous is called a loose man, that showeth pride in anger.

The slothful man dieth over his desires: for his hands will do nothing.

He desireth daily; but the righteous giveth, and faileth not.

The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination: for they are offered in sins.

A lying witness shall perish: but he that obeyeth shall always be heard again.

The wicked goeth through with his head: but he that is righteous shall stand.

No wisdom, no understanding, no counsel, can avail against the LORD.

Horses are prepared for the day of battle: but the victory is of the LORD.

Chapter 22
Of good report and name, whereby he is obtained and prevented.

Rumour is more precious than great riches, and favour better than silver and gold.

Rich and poor must be one with another: the LORD hath made them all.

the funny man sees the misfortune and hides himself; the silly go through and are damaged.

Wherever there is suffering in the fear of the LORD, there is riches and honour and life.

There are thorns and cords in the way of the wicked: but he that is fenced from them preserveth his life.

As a boy is accustomed, so he will not leave it when he is old.

The rich ruleth over the poor, and he that boreth is the servant of the hireling.

He that soweth iniquity shall reap trouble, and shall perish with the rod of his wickedness.

A good eye is blessed: for he giveth his bread to the poor.

Cast out the scorner, and the quarrel shall be put away: then cease from strife and reproach.

A friend of the king is he that hath a true heart and a kind speech.

The eyes of the LORD keep good counsel: but the words of the scorner he turneth back.

The slothful man saith, There is a lion without, I would be slain in the street.

The mouth of the harlot is a deep pit: whosoever the LORD displeaseth shall fall into it.

Folly is in the heart of the child: but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.

Whosoever shall wrong the poor, that his goods may be much, the same shall give to the rich, and shall lack.

Incline thine ear, and hear the words of the wise, and take my teaching to heart.
