and a taxation, which shall come upon all the earth from the LORD of hosts.

Give ear, and hear my voice: give ear, and hear my words.

Doth a husbandman also plow, or till, or work his field for seed continually?

Is it not so? And when he hath made it even, he shall scatter vetches, and cast caraway, and sow wheat and barley, every one where he will, and spelt in his place.

So also their God chasteneth them with judgment, and teacheth them.

For the vetches are not threshed with a threshing cart, neither is the cart wheel made to go over the caraway: but the vetches are beaten with a rod, and the caraway with a stick.

They grind it to make it bread, and do not crush it, when they thresh it with the wheels of chariots and with horses.

This also is done of the LORD of hosts: for his counsel is wonderful, and he bringeth it forth gloriously.

Chapter 29
Jerusalem is to be destroyed, the Jews blinded, the Gentiles converted.

Woe unto Ariel, Ariel, thou city of the camp of David! Ye keep seasons, and celebrate feasts.

But I will afflict Ariel, that he may be sad and wretched; and he shall be a true Ariel unto me.

For I will besiege thee round about, and will make thee afraid with a fortress, and will set up ramparts round about thee.

Then shalt thou be humbled, and shalt speak out of the earth, and shalt murmur with thy
speech out of the dust: thy voice shall be as the voice of a sorcerer out of the earth, and thy speech shall whisper out of the dust.

And the multitude that scatter thee shall be as a thin dust, and the multitude of tyrants as a waving chaff: and it shall come to pass suddenly soon.

For thou shalt be visited of the LORD of hosts with tempests, and with earthquakes, and with great thunderings, and with whirlwinds, and with tempests, and with flames of devouring fire.

But as a night vision in a dream, so shall be the multitude of all the heathen that fight against Ariel, with all their armies and their fortresses, and that fear him.

For as a hungry man dreameth that he eateth, but when he awaketh his soul is still empty: and as a thirsty man dreameth that he drinketh, but when he awaketh he is faint and thirsty: so shall be the multitude of all the Gentiles that fight against mount Zion.

Be stiffnecked, and be dismayed; be blinded, and be drunken, but not with wine; be staggered, but not with strong drink.

For the LORD hath given you a spirit of hard sleep, and hath closed your eyes; he hath blinded your prophets, and your princes, and your seers,

And the visions of all the prophets shall be unto you as the words of a sealed book, which, if it were given to one that can read, saith, Read this; and he saith, I cannot, because it is sealed, 12. Or as if it were given to him that cannot read, saying, Read this; and he saith, I cannot read.

And the LORD saith, Because this people draw near unto me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but their heart is far from me, and they fear me according to the commandment of men, which they teach,

I will also deal strangely with this people, most strangely and oddly, that the wisdom of their wise men may perish, and the understanding of their prudent men be blinded.

Woe unto them that desire to be hid from the LORD, that hide their ways, and their doings, and keep them in darkness, and say: Who seeth us, and who knoweth us?

How wickedly are ye! As if a potter’s clay were remembered, and a work were said of its master, He hath not made me; and a vessel were said of its potter, He knoweth me not.

Now therefore, there is yet a little to be done, and Lebanon shall be a field, and the field shall be reckoned a forest.

For in that day shall the deaf hear the words of the book, and the eyes of the blind shall see out of darkness and gloom,

And the miserable shall have joy again in the LORD, and the poor of men shall rejoice in the Holy One of Israel,

When the tyrants shall be ended, and the scoffers shall be finished, and all they that watch to do mischief shall be destroyed,

Who make men to sin by preaching, and go after him that punisheth them in the gate, departing from the righteous by lying.

Therefore thus saith the LORD that redeemed Abraham unto the house of Jacob; Jacob shall be put to shame no more, neither shall his face be ashamed any more.

For when they shall see their children, the works of my hands among them, they shall hallow my name, and shall sanctify the Holy One in Jacob, and shall fear the God of Israel.

For they that have an erroneous spirit shall receive understanding, and the talkers shall be taught.

Chapter 30
In God, ‘and not in creatures, shall one put his trust.

Woe unto the apostate children, saith the LORD, which counsel without me, and seek refuge without my Spirit, to heap sin upon sin,

Who go down into Egypt, and ask not my mouth, that they may strengthen themselves with the power of Pharaoh, and shelter themselves under the shadow of Egypt.

For the strength of Pharaoh shall be a reproach unto you, and the shelter under the shadow of Egypt a mockery.

Their princes have been in Zoan, and their message is come to Hanesh, 5. But they shall all be ashamed of the people, which shall not be able to profit them, neither to help them, nor to profit them, but only to shame and to mock them.

This is the burden of the beasts that go toward the south, where there are lions, and lionesses, and vipers, and fiery flying dragons, in the land of affliction and anguish: they carry their goods upon the backs of the colts, and their treasures upon the humps of the camels, unto the people, which cannot profit them.

For Egypt is nothing, and her help is vain. Therefore thus preach I: Rahab shall sit quietly by.

Go therefore, write it before them upon a tablet, and write it in a book, that it may stand for ever.

For they are a rebellious people, and lying children, which will not hear the law of the LORD, 10. But say unto the seers: Ye shall not see! and to the showers: Ye shall not see us the right doctrine: but preach unto us gently, behold us deceit!

Depart from the way, make yourselves of the way; let the holy one in Israel cease from us.

Therefore thus saith the Holy One in Israel, Because ye reject this word, and rely upon iniquity and wickedness, and defy it,

Then shall such iniquity be unto you as a breach in a high wall, when it begineth to trickle, which suddenly falleth and is broken down,

As when a pot is broken, which is broken, and not spared; so that there is not found of the pieces thereof a fragment to make fire out of the hearth, or to draw water out of a well.

For thus saith the Lord GOD, the Holy One of Israel; If ye be quiet, ye shall be saved: by quietness and hope ye shall be strong. But ye will not

And say, Nay; but on horses will we flee (therefore ye shall be fugitives> and on runners will we ride (therefore your pursuers will overtake you).

For a thousand of you shall flee from the rebuke of a few, yea, from five ye shall all flee: until ye be left as a pole upon a mountain, and as a banner upon a hill.

Therefore wait ye on the LORD, that he may have mercy upon you: for the LORD is a God of judgment: good to all them that wait on him.

For the people of Zion shall dwell at Jerusalem: thou shalt not weep: he will be gracious unto thee when thou shalt call; he will answer thee when he heareth.

And the LORD will give you bread in tribulation, and water in anguish: for he will not suffer thy teacher to depart, but thine eyes shall see thy teacher,

And thine ears shall hear the word spoken behind thee, saying thus, This is the way that ye go: otherwise not to the right hand, nor to the left.

And ye shall profane your silvered idols, and the precious garments of your images, and shall cast them away as filth, and shall say unto them, Get thee out.

And he shall give rain unto thy seed, which thou hast sown in the field, and bread of the revenue of the field, and full sufficiency thereof. And thy cattle shall feed in that day in a wide pasture.

The oxen and the bullocks that till the field shall eat mingled fodder, which is winnowed with the shovel and the tub.

And upon all the great mountains, and upon all the great hills, shall be divided rivers of water in the time of the great battle, when the towers shall fall.

And the light of the moon shall be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun shall be seven times brighter than now, in the days when the LORD shall bind up the hurt of his people, and heal their wounds.

Behold, the name of the LORD cometh afar off; his wrath burneth, and is very fierce; his lips are full of fury, and his tongue is as a consuming fire.
